I like Sid Lowe's articles most of the time. This is also an interesting one, however, this unnecessary fuss about Las Palmas is quite wrong. They are not even the same as Hercules with Trezeguet and Co.
If you watch them from a neutral point of view, especially the first two matches, you might be excited. When everyone here and elsewhere were hyping them as the "Leicester of La Liga".. you can see a previous comment of mine in Las Palmas' thread, WAIT UNTIL THEY FACE A SERIOUS TEAM!
In the last match against Sevilla, one could depict their play as: dirty, wasting time, hoping for a counter attack while parking the bus. If you don't agree... watch the full match again without any emotion and without the hype of Las Palmas in mind.
I can't even understand how a team that wins 2 matches against weak opponents (I stand corrected calling Valencia weak, 3 losses in 3 matches, at least they're weak at the moment), can be considered as the Leicester of La Liga (meaning an underdog title contender), when they go on to have only 30% of possession in the next match with a serious team (not typical Leicester) and have only 1 clear chance at goal with an out of the box shot and the sun coming to help (Rico's unclear vision, although it was a decent shot nonetheless, you can see it again on replay).
Now to be clear, I definitely hate EPL and their pathetic clubs... so I'll always root for Las Palmas if they'd face an EPL club and would never go to protect an EPL club if the case is 50-50. However, expecting from Las Palmas to do what Leicester did, is just crazy, plain and simple. They're not even a "sympathetic" club as someone mentioned... if you'd seen the match vs. Sevilla you will know what I'm talking about. Leicester, no matter how crap they are and no matter that they would battle for an EL spot in La Liga even in their prime (last season)... they still didn't get annihilated and utterly dominated by serious teams in EPL. They didn't waste time, they didn't play dirty... they had a lot of chances and scored a lot... played decent football (not just counter attacking), didn't always park the bus during the match. Therefore, if this can be considered the prime of Las Palmas, then the prime of Leicester is BARCA 2008-09 for Las Palmas.
I'd hope that people would be more realistic and down to earth when it comes to hypes. A prime example (which I can't ever forget) was the case of Mangala... when he scored a header vs. Sevilla with Porto in an EL quarter-final a couple of years ago. Everyone here were considering him as one of the best CB's in the world... and some even wanted him at Barca. The next leg a week after... Sevilla wins 4-0... Mangala one of the flops in the match. He then joins Man City... can't even get ahead of Demichelis and fails, now he's loaned out to the weak Valencia as a replacement for Mustafi.
I hate the unhealthy hypes and fusses since Pato's era at Ac Milan... look at the guy now.
