Lionel Messi - v7

Messi
Maradona
Dinho
Iniesta
Ronaldo
Best

I put Iniesta in instead of CR because its absurd CR is in this list. I also think at his peak Iniestas dribbling is still underrated compared to the all time greats, mostly because he dribbles while moving slowly or staying in the same spot.

I also say this as someone whos seen all of these players live (Though with Maradona it was just once and I was very, very young)

Iniesta is basically Messi without the explosiveness, his close control is equally good imo.

I wish Font would shut the hell up. Xavi this and Xavi that. Didn't he also say he would have let Messi leave back August? Now, he wants to make Messi the future of the club? This idiot will say anything to get elected. He's another Bartomeu in the making.

I already place Xavi and Iniesta above him in terms of legend status, even though Messi is the better player. Because legend is not only about how you play, but also how you respect the club outside of the football pitch. Messi is failing at that.

Xavi hasn't been very good outside the football pitch. He's backed a candidate for president who's main thing has been 'Xavi will be manager'. His selfish attitude of wanting to be coach despite his huge lack of experience is undermining the managers that were at barca at the moment this whole 'xavi will be coach' was announced and of course currently Koeman. Whether or not Koeman turns out to be good or not (probably not good enough), these aren't positive actions outside the club. Iniesta is an angel though

Can he win an election saying he is not going to renew Messi though. It's Socio's who are voting, not Sergei'os.

Best case option is to say you want to keep Messi, but Messi signs a contract with another club already.

Last thing we need is a whole election campaign revolving around keeping Messi and whether Xavi wants toast for breakfast or cheerios.

I don't have problems with his wish to keep Messi but with his wordings, especially this part (if it's correctly translated).

"I have already told Ferran Soriano [City CEO] to forget about Messi,"

Font can't say anyone to forget about Messi because Messi alone is the one who can and will decide where he'll play. He can freely negotiate and even sign (though I don't expect this to happen) with another club in a few weeks before the next president will even be elected.

Fully agree about the election campaign. Candidates should focus on how to first improve club's finances so we can then hopefully build a new competitive team in 2-3 years. A team that can still have Messi or not. That's on him.

If he'll stay then it should be because he wants to stay and possibly finish his career here and he'll still be fully committed to the team not just because City won't want him anymore. I don't think he'd be as comfortable going to PSG though Neymar could possibly convince him and I don't see other clubs as serious destinations for him unless he'll decide to return to Argentina.

Also, if he stays then as Serghei has pointed out it should be under different conditions, starting with reducing his wages. We shouldn't still pay him for what he has done in the past (the club doesn't "owe" him anything) but rather for what he can do over the next year or two. If he can accept a new reality both from a financial and sporting standpoint then fine, if not it's better for both sides to move on. It won't be easy but Barca will survive. The club is bigger than any player.

Xavi was their playmate and friend. He played with Busquets, Pique, Messi, Alba, Sergi Roberto, etc., so I do not think he, as a manager, is going to convert them as substitutes. While these players continue playing for Barca, I do not think Xavi would be a good option

Font is clearly just playing the opposite role to bartomeu, he's simply being a politician. Bartomeu has been viewed by millions of barca fans as being the one who wouldn't respect Messi's wishes (whether that should be the case or not). So now Font has to make sure people are aware he respects Messi and is the antithesis to Bartomeu who has so monumentally fucked barca up.

Oh man, including CR in a list of peak dribblers is criminal. Just criminal. I'd also put Iniesta above Ronnie because he did it for longer and in a subtler way--with less flare--which is probably why he didnt stand out as much. But believe me Iniesta was an unbelievable dribbler, better than Dinho, if with less pace (again at peak)

City can still do it if and particularly if they include post career incentives.

Messi would have to take less than now though surely.

He will have options even if not City.. there will be loads of links to and from them regardless if they are really interested from now until he signs next contract.

Messi would be better for City than he is at Barca.

Wherever he signs he will take a paycut, Barca at best can maybe offer him half what he earns now, probably not even that. City maybe more.

I believe he's also more likely to take a paycut to be able to leave Barca, less so to resign.

Cant have the argument that Messi is worth it as brings so much revenue and Barca cant afford him.

If it came to Barca taking out loans to keep him they would do it in these circumstances.

The wage limits imposed by La Liga wont be strictly adhered to. They would never impose that in these circumstances and hinder Spanish clubs.

I don't know if he'd be better. Some positives, but also some negatives. EPL is much stronger than La Liga is now, and Messi is terrible in La Liga. City is on the way down as well.

Could be a terrible move for Messi tbh.

I think he would do well at City as they have so much of ball and can carry him more than Barca can and then allow him to be difference maker.

They would be worse defensively and have less options and movement off the ball which could impact likes of KDB and team overall which is why purely on football not sure it is a good move.

City as a team may be worse but he would be better than is at Barca.

Here comes trouble and make it double

Antoine Griezmann: "Not spoken for a long time? Yes, I think it's been since my presentation. Because, as I said that day, I only wanted to express myself on the pitch, not off. But I think it's time to put things in their place. I've had to endure a lot of things." [movistar]

There's little to no excuses for Griezmann being a pathetic goalscorer now that Suarez is gone.

He's got mostly himself to blame for that.
