Zidane had a terrible world cup 98.. I remember every single game of that world cup. France s défense was the real Zidane of that tournament. They had incredible défense.. And good midfield and attack.

It really sucked that Di Maria got injured in the QF. I think with him, Argentina could have won the WC.

raul missed pen and france always had pen at crucial moment.
not even mention del piero who wasted chances to finish france.
messi has never had that kind of luck at nt level

Messi's been elite for 15 years and world-best for 10+. Maradona was elite for like 8 years and world best for 2-3. The only feather in Maradona's cap is that his peak is probably the most glorious in all of football history (magnitude of moment wise, I can easily argue 2011 Messi or 2015 Messi was simply better). Other than that, Messi has him beat in all categories.

Given the halo of Maradona (and he was brilliant) you'd think he was the best in the world for a decade rather than a couple of years.

Pele difficult to assess as he never played in Europe so outside of Brazil people never watched him outside of World Cups.
