Lionel Messi - v7

Marca writing it'll be a 5 year contract, but he leaves for the MSL after two seasons and acts as an ambassador. The paycut could actually be a thing, just not as big as people make it out to be.

1. At the moment, we don't konw anything about his new contract (or ever if he will stay at barca)... only rumors / gossip, nothing official.
2. as always after every 20 comments, in the equation it's forgotten to take into account how much review Messi generetes for Braca. Very very very very likely Leo generates more than he earns.

What do they mean about this alleged 50% paycut journalists mention in combination with a 5 years long contract (if that's possible due to Liga rules)?

Say Messi earns a 100m now. Takes a 50% paycut. So it's 50m times 2 years paid over 50 years which equals 20m per season, right?

Hope it doesn't mean 50m times 5 years

But Messi is still owned shit ton from his earlier contact no?(few bonuses at least) Maybe he is getting paid those in the next five years too. Instead of now.

Just throwing theory. No idea of reality.

Just under those tweets he's been called out for being wrong by the people reporting the figures so...

A lot of the foreign media ran with the story about his total contract value being 555m or whatever it was, but a lot of that money depended on fulfilling various clauses like CL titles which we all know didn't happen

Such contracts are never straight forward, but a newspaper wanting to sell a story will obviously never go into the details of what was paid and what wasn't. How the contract actually was structured or not.

Planting Messi's face and the 555m figure on your front page sells better, and it really did because now most people believe he actually was paid 555m over the duration of that contract.

From your own link:
That left around ?75m across the four years in bonuses for playing >60 percent of games, winning La Liga, the Champions League etc + individual awards. Many of those bonuses were not met

So, if none of the bonuses were met, it's a 480m instead of a 555m contract. And we know at least some of them certainly were, so aren't familiar with precise numbers. Let's not pretend it's such a drastic difference.

It's still a significant difference as all players took paycuts due to COVID. Messi might have waived some of those bonuses as well.

My point is: Context is important and these foreign journalists eating up El Mundo's story don't care about it. I'm not sure most of them even read the story.
