Lionel Messi - v7

Guillem Balague was on CBS sports giving analysis on the Barca-Napoli match. He said something very interesting and insightful that only this forum has deduced:

The tactics now are to hope for 15-20 mins of Messi magic, and then "rest" and sit back the rest of the match. As long as Messi can score a goal or set someone up during one/two magic moments in a match, the team will be content and will hope to absorb pressure. What's the reason for these tactics? He said it's because everyone, including front office, realizes that this squad is old. Average age squad is what, 32-33? They know this team can't run and pressure for 90 mins. This is their best hope.

For me, if we do sit back and absorb pressure, we need to bring in Fati and Dembele.

We couldn't get the ball out from our own half vs Napoli in the 2nd half as we didn't play anyone who can either resist pressure or anyone who can exploit the space Napoli left behind by speed.

For the love of god, I hope we sub out Suarez for either Fati or Dembele

Ding ding ding.

If we are sitting back, we need to sub out Messi and Suarez. Bring in guys who can run and counter.

Even Messi lacks speed in counter. Suarez is hopeless.

Two guys upfront running and pressing the opponent.

 Dude you're losing your mind.

The rest of the strike force (Suarez, Griezo, Fati, Dembele) combined doesn't have Messi's scoring ability. Slow or not, he needs to be on the pitch.

Esp. versus Napoli he should have been subbed off. He was injurd or finished. No help whatsoever.

You are right with Suarez but Messi needs to be on the pitch as he isnt not only by far our best finisher he can also play through balls like no other player. I think against Neapel he missed a player who ran into the gaps. Suarez is too slow and Griezmann lacks the instinct. Fati would have been perfect but Setien is a jerk.

Or maybe just conserving himself for Bayern...

hmm conserving energy while the score is 3-1 and neapel press us into our half ? If they would scored the 3-2 puuh maybe we would have seen Roma/liverpool 2.0. Nevertheless the match is history now and we need to focus on Bayern. Hope Goat is playing in Goat-Mode :barcascarf:

I watched this atleast 10 times. Look at this Messi - dribbling like 2011 Messi, incredible passing and perfect finishing. The only time I saw this Messi again was against Liverpool at home last year.

Incredible...Insane highlights..GOAT dribbling,passing and finishing.

What impressed me even more is how FASTER we were playing compared to today...Even Rakitic...

Yeah even Rakitiv was incredible. Imagine 14/15 Barca against 19/20 Barca. Messi was on another planet in this day, you saw in his eyes he wanted the revenge for 2013 and the WC loss 2014 against the germans. I miss this Messi so much.

the level of pressing and tenacity from us was insane compared to its current state.
