In reality he should have a legacy that it would be stupid to even compare him to anyone, but in 50 years he will be remembered like some bumnaldo level guy that stepped up once in a while.

In 50 years, Messi and Ronaldo will probably be as irrelevant to the modern generation as Pele or Di Stefano are today.

Not having a World Cup will really hurt their legacies as the years go on. It’s the one competition that people seem to hold onto for decades. Messi’s league form barely gets noticed now by a lot of football fans, so imagine how little people will care in 50 years.

Not too sure about that. Messi’s career is well documented with youtube there to perpuate his performances. Great players will rise in the future but then someone will drop the name Messi and people will go to YT to check out how good this Messi really was and conclude he might actually have been better than whatever name in the future.

Also, Messi and CR will be the players to have won the balon dor the most for a long time to come.

It’s still really hard to assess a player’s career just by watching or reading about them decades later if you weren’t around at the time. There’s plenty of videos from players in the 80s and 90s, but I never feel like I can judge how good they were without being alive at the time to put their performances in context.

We’ll have to see how much more football will evolve in the future. Regardless, nobody will be able to deny Messi’s freekick skills, shot and finishing, ball control, creativity, reading of the game, longetivity and consistency. Even if the game becomes faster or will rely more on physicality.

Messi was better than Van Djik over those two legs though. He scored 2 goals, laid numerous chances on a plate (even in the 2nd leg) and he's not responsible for how his team defends. He was by far the top scorer in the CL, far better than Van Djik in the competition overall (van djik should have been banned after that horror tackle vs Napoli) and also won his domestic league with an insane amount of goals and assists, pretty much carrying them to that title.

And yes, they were missing two players .. but as a side, Liverpool are far better coached than Barcelona are right now. They rely less on individual assets like Messi, that and it was a fluke night in which everything went right for them and everything went wrong for Barca. This happens in the champions league, it's an unpredictable bitch of a competition and individual awards should never be handed out based on one off knockout games. Messi tore up the whole competition and had one under par night and apparently that means VVD had a better season. Ok??

Look, again these awards mean very little .. but we're not seriously arguing Van Djik played better than Messi did this season, right? Like who out there is consistently watching both of these players perform and thinking Van Djik looks better?

(Rare truthful post from redcafe. Hopefully the voters for The Best and Ballon d’Or find their senses in time)

The reality is that these awards look more at the CL than anything else. CL is the competition with the biggest teams in it and the only place where these top players can compete with each other.

Sadly, us with Messi in our team are embarassments in CL for 2 years running. Liverpool are not. They are last year's finalists and this year's winners. By performing like that their best players will get their turn at picking up the individual titles. It seems Van Dijk is that player, not Salah.

It's just how it is with awards. Best player in the best team in Europe wins these titles more often that not. That best team is currently Liverpool. Could have been us but we dropped the ball.

This award depends more on what the media write on their papers, PR machinery, 2nd the actual stats of individual players.

If VVD can win award for his defense, i think Ramos should have won one for Real Madrid. He's more of a game changer than VVD

With stats and advanced stats becoming increasingly important Messi will be seen as being a statistical outlier and far above other players from his generation, everything about his career has been measured and documented while theres little footage and only raw like games and goals available for Pele and Di Stefano.

Would this formation be possible. Using Neymar and Dembele to cause havoc with speed. and Messi/Griezman being like the iniesta/xavi, sitting back a little.

Neymar...........................Dembele

......Messi..................Griezman....

.........Busquets..........De Jong.......

Alba.......Umtiti...........Pique..........Semedo
