Lionel Messi - v7

Can't see how on earth we will line-up with the players we currently have. We need to desperately mask Messi's lack of movement/running so I really can't see playing him in anything other than the striker role with Saurez leaving.

I don't see how CURRENT Messi can play in any position on at 4-2-3-1 formation other than in the ST position.

MAtS
Semedo - Pique/Garcia - Lenglet - Alba
FDJ-Pjanic/Gini
Trincao/another RW - Griezmann/Coutinho/Puig - Fati/Dembele
Messi

Our squad is straight up terrible lmao...no balance at all.

And our defense is the worst part. It's so bad.

Honestly only his stamina will decline.

His dribbling is still god like ( check his completed dribbles), shooting is just off under Setien, he will get it back soon.

You can't check his completed dribbles.

He is dropping deep to a pivot-Cm position and then he tries to dribble past 5 players.

When he drops to a Cm position, he is not surrounded by Ramos and Marcelo but surrounded by let's say Vinicius, Isco, Modric etc
The same applies to Getafe, Levante etc

So, nowadays, majority of his completed dribbles are useless dribbles against random forwards and midfielders.

When he gets near the box, he is nowadays dispossed or fauled.
In a CL, he is dispossed with ease.

His completed dribbles at CM position are as deceiving as 95% of successfull passes by Arthur or Rakitic when 90% of their attempts are backpasses to Pique and Busi.

Totally. He drops deep because he lacks the speed and movement to find pockets of space in crowded areas, something he excelled at in his younger days (of course the quality of service he received was impeccable, courtesy of Xavi, Iniesta, and Pep's fluid total-football tactics). His dribbles in the last third, near the box have gone down massively comparing with his best years.

Considering its City you are dealing with, i can understand, and support trying to get some money off them, they shouldnt have any issues paying 100 mill or something for a player they really want.

This is something many people seem to neglect

The passes he gets are not chances, he has to create basically all his own goals. In a team with an actual system with a real strategy, like Barca were under Pep, he'll get chances created by others. Something City right now can offer and Barca can't do. Messi has papered over the cracks of this team for a long time now. If he goes to City, you'll see.

And our defense is the worst part. It's so bad.

I've already accepted La Liga and CL are out of reach if we have Semedo/Roberto and Alba/Firpo as our fullbacks next year.

Our fullback situation is nothing short of a nightmare. Mid-table level at best.

Well, 33 years does that to you. You get slower and lose stamina. Although he did slalom between the whole Bayern defense and had a good shot. With luck that would be 1-2. We would still get demolished though..

It depends how much we cover the gaps on the field next season. If Koeman can get all 10 to run then the FB situation won't be as noticeably bad.

Two holding midfielders and both that can run will help as well.

As will not having players walking about in attack leaving opposition full backs all the time in world to get forward and double up.

Teams tactics v Barca are too easy.

High line, push full backs on and press in numbers. All three CL hammerings came from teams playing as basic as that and a lot of it begins from threat on break and lack of defending/pressing in forward areas.

We should set a rule on this forum from now on.

The same as how it is stupid comparing new kids with Xavi since no one will reach that level, maybe we should stop using this comparison: in a system like Pep's he would do this or that...
Pep's Barca was one of the best teams ever.
Maybe we should compare things with "mortal" teams and systems.

So, the question shouldn't be: how would Messi play in Pep's Barca, but whether a current Messi can get into chances surrounded by "mortal" teammates and playing under "mortal" coaches in "mortal" systems.

Regarding your post how passes to him aren't chances, well, he is guilty also.
He is not moving off the ball at all, so of course that passes to him are not chances at all.
He is dropping deep and waiting for the ball at a CM position, of course that those passes are not "chances".

Yes, our board is bad, coaches were meh, players weren't the best, but Messi in the last few years is a big factor of our downfall, tactical mess, poor mental strength, Messipendencia etc.

Next few hours fc is back.

❗️ Lionel Messi, supported by his father and his lawyers, has decided to reverse his desire to leave Barcelona this summer. The Argentine's new plan would be to bet on his continuity in the team but only for one more season, until June 2021. [cuatro]

In addition, Messi thinks it would be great to be able to say goodbye to the fans, who will presumably already be able to enter the Camp Nou after the capacity restrictions. In 2021, Messi could join Manchester City on a free deal. The next few hours are vital. [cuatro]
