Lionel Messi - v7

Laporta needs this team to work in 1 or 2 years or he is gone by fans and media. Of course Messi is staying, and he'll pay him whatever he needs. We cant use that money in a "better" player like Haaland or Mbappe, they'll be more expensive between tranfer and salary.

Too many morons on here.

We are not paying Messi after he leaves we are paying him what he's owed for the 2 or so years he stays over several years to spread out the cost.

Not hard to understand

100m a year is called a paycut? 100m a year for two years is too much, no matter how far you stretch out the terms, 5 years or 10 years or 20 years.

Barca reminds me of a desperate loser begging his girlfriend not to dump him. The kind of guy who couldn't get laid to save his life before lucking into a relationship, and now can't fathom trying to find someone new. It's really pathetic behavior for a 'historic' club...

I feel like the father of a woman(barca) who is married to a great guy(messi). However my daughter has been behaving like a complete bitch, cheating on her man left and right and treating him like a doormat. Even though I love my daughter, I want her husband(Messi) to leave for his own good instead of continuing being made a fool of.

Sounds like you got dumped on in real life and can't get over it

Worry less about Barcelona and more about getting over this lad.

Messi fanatics will jump on you but I totally agree. "LOL Griezmann? we won't even make top 4 without Messi" is the usual reply; as if La liga is the PL with world class managers and talent. Madrid will be weaker next season also without Ramos and possibly Varane

Last summer was the time to leave, few seasons at City and then retire into the sunset but now we will have to watch a shitshow unfold. Probably cuts in other areas to siphon more wages to Messi. You'd think Barca didn't exist until Messi came along

obviously I love Messi and everything he achieved here but this is just prolonging any rebuild. If we had a decent squad + manager that might sneak another CL that would be different but this is a pitiful end to Leo's career

Exactly, someone would think that Barca didn't exist before Messi. We would still be able to finish top 4 in La liga without Messi for 2 years plus because Spanish teams arent currently too strong again. However, lets see how it all goes

Barca will never go into the full rebuild people think they should.

Doesn't matter if Messi stays or not. The money simply isn't there. No one want a full rebuild. Not players like Frenkie, Ansu. You really think they will stick around for a full rebuild lasting 2-3 years where we'll suck ass? Not Laporta because his job hinges on Barca being good and not bad which a full rebuild means. Not the fans no matter what some of the guys in this forum say or claim because once the team starts losing or performing poorly the very same people go batshit crazy and lose their shit.

The goal is to remain competitive or become more competitive by replacing parts of the team from year to year. If you're lucky you can become a CL contender within a year or two if you hit on all your sales and incoming transfers.

If not then....well it'll just take more time.

I don't understand what some people actually expect or think a rebuild means? It's like they think they're playing FIFA Career Mode where you can just sell a bunch of players and start over again if shit gets bad.

It literally doesn't work like that.

Now if we can sign a CB and replace Pique that way, and also sell Alba and replace him with a new player that's as good or marginally worse, but doesn't lose his shit in big games....you've already achieved a lot when it comes to your rebuild and potentially being much better.

Now whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but we're not even in july yet.

What we are doing is fine. We are rebuilding on the go while staying competitive (domestically at least). Replaced Suarez and yet had the domestic double in our hands only to fuck it up like idiots vs mid to bottom table clubs in the end stretch of the season.

Now we need to drop Pique and Stegen. That would be the next step. Pique first, with Stegen being under probation. If his saving percentage is still crap, bench him.

Yeah, agreed. Don't have a problem with paying it off in 5 years, but 100m a year is no paycut.

In general football players earn way too much money imo, of course its paid based on supply and demand but is it necessary to pay money for 10 human lifes? Give them enough money therewith they can relax the whole life but let their children or grandchildren work by themself like normal people. There are lots of jobs which are vital for human society like doctors or policemen but in our Western civilisation, a person's salary bears no relation to their value to society.

It also appears we need to cut 200m euros from the salaries if we keep Messi here.

Laporta literally doesn't care as long as Messi is still here.

Imagine the money we could have saved if we let Messi go last year. 133m euros in salaries and bonuses, another 33m from his loyalty fee, a potential 50m to 70m euros for a transfer fee if we sold last summer..... and we would have saved money from a signing-on and agent fees.

We still would have finished in the top 4 last season without Messi. Let's be honest, La Liga hasn't been that strong of a league for a while..... and we would have more than enough to get in the top 4 this season. It's not like we got far in the Champions League or won in the league in any case.

This deal is a big gamble on a 34-year-old regardless if it is Messi. If he gets a big injury, it's pretty much fucked us.

That s what happens with the level of success Barca had in the last two decades. It brings a lot of fans, but most of them are teenage glory humter fans that have no clue about football or about identity of the club. Some here thought Dembouz will be our main superstar after Messi, i mean lol!

It's pretty much confirmed that we need to reduce salaries from ~650ME to ~350ME. That's where the ~200ME number is coming from if we renew Messi for ~40-50ME per year over 5 years. If we don't renew Messi we still need to get rid of ~150ME in wages.

Hardly an insane difference. Commercially I am sure Messi at the quoted figures makes sense and could be a big help getting through this short term (1-2 years). Paying most of his salary post Corona in a hopefully more relaxed situation is a big advantage.

The big fuckign question is how we got to 650ME in the first place (well, we know the answer). It's utterly insane compared to other teams even without Messi.

Can't help but lose some respect for Laporta if the reports are true; us having to cut player salaries for Messi's new deal whilst being in a pandemic and the club in financial ruin. Sure we should be cutting wages but not to fund another ridiculous wage for 1 player. The greed from Leo is unreal yet we are supposed to believe he plays for Barca out of pure love

Imagine throwing away any chance for progress in the next 2 years for a 34 year old that wanted to leave last year anyways.
