Like I say, he's obviously a brilliant player, I am probably too harsh on him at times because of my distaste for him.@mara they didnt stop winning serie after he arrived, they won it in his first 2 of 3 years when he has been there 🤬
Thanks for the warm welcome.Welcome! If you have questions dont be shy to ask us 👍 random question: Where do you put Cristiano in yout list?
Thanks for the warm welcome and for your advice.First of all, thanks very much.
Just google top 50 players ever or best players post WWII and plenty will come up. Also, wikipedia is pretty accurate these days and you can attain a lot of good information from there - for instance I already knew a good amount about the World Cup, but I learned about lesser events and lesser known players when I was writing articles for a site prior to the 2022 edition. You can learn from there about all sorts of leagues, players etc. As long as you check the sources it will be fine. And the sources will lead you to good football sites too. There's stuff on the history of the game, players, tactics etc.
I have lost a bit of love for learning about the game as I get older, but if your appetite is still very strong there are definitely places on the internet. As I said start with wikipedia.
Another good place to start is books. There's books about individual nations' histories, like Futebol: The Brazilian Way, Tor! (German football), or Brilliant Orange (Dutch).
Two really good books I have heard of (though I have only read about half of the first) are Inverting the Pyramid (Jonathan Wilson) and The Ball is Round (David Goldblatt). The first is about the history of tactics, the second more of an expansive look into the history of the game. I will read both in future I expect. Another good guy to read about tactics is Michael Cox sometimes, though he can be hit and miss.
Best of luck on youir journey about learning more about the history of the game.
You're welcome. Thanks for the warm welcome and for your advice.
I have spent countless hours on wikipedia, youtube and other sites discussing football and it's history to gather information. I have neglected the books so far, so I will definitely use this source more often in the future. If you haven't read my post to Fati above: where is the right place to post and discuss such top lists and history of the game in general here? Maybe a new thread?
Opened a thread for youThanks for the warm welcome.
Cristiano is one of the most difficult to rank from my top 20 tbh. In my opinion he is definitely top 10, there is no doubt about that. He finds himself between 4 and 6 at the moment. The holy trinity of Messi, Pelé and Maradona are far ahead as they offer(ed) so much more to the overall game than Cristiano, especially in terms of dribbling, ball progression and creativity. Cristianos sheer goalscoring capability and versatility(!) regarding his ability to shoot strong and precise with both feet and his all time great heading of the ball is what makes him really special (and therefore among the top 4 to 6 in my list; with Alfredo di Stéfano and Johan Cruyff being the other).
I don't want to start my barcaforum journey with totally going off-topic in Messi's thread though (probably already too late at this point 😅), so I thought we could open a new thread for discussions on top lists and rating players in historic context in general. I don't know how this forum works yet, so maybe you could enlighten me.
Like I say, he's obviously a brilliant player, I am probably too harsh on him at times because of my distaste for him.
But it just feels 'wrong' based on my football experience, playing and watching, to rate him on Messi's level, or Maradona and Pele. I don't know how to explain it but i just get a weird, unnatural feeling when he is placed there. Like my body and brain are telling me he doesn't belong there at all. Like how I would react to a bad smell.
It's hard to explain really, I just don't think the hype or reputation matches the reality. I think his fame off the park and his so-called 'looks (lol) give him a massive boost as a player. But I would still likely have him top 10 of all time. Though there have been many brilliant players.
I think most of his reputation comes from his goal record. Without that, I think he would be rated far lower. What people don't realise though is he has tons of poor performances he masks with goals. Messi isn't really like that. That's the difference for me - Messi's game doesn't revolve around shallow G/A stats (despite the fact he gets lots of them anyway) - Ronaldo's does.

Im by far the oldest guy in this forum.
The KL group are often annoying when topic is Cristiano/Messi but otherwise good heart.
Rules are:
