As if goals are the only way to judge a performance?

Ronaldo got criticism in 2014 mostly because Portugal went out in the groupstage, Messi got criticism (including after the 2014 WC) for not winning with Argentina regardless of his performances.

if you score a hattrick but your team looses the match 3-4 why should media critize you

Poland were shambles, so no, not really.

He scored 3 goals, motm 2 out of 3 games, and one of the top performers on most ratings(whoscored etc).

He did about as well as he could have done, not his fault that Poland are below average.

well said Morty

Lewa was class for Poland at the EUROs. Showed once again that he is so much more than just a "poacher." I have no idea where that assessment came from. It's like people have never watched him play for Dortmund or Poland. Even for Bayern he is playmaking like crazy

Muller or even Kimmich playmaking like crazy for Bayern but not Lewandowski. He is still clear striker and this shouldn't be on him.

Eh...no, lets not take it that far.

He was indeed unlucky for having poland nationality, but let's get honest, national team trophy is still judged as one of the parameter to be considered as one of the best.

If messi were egyptian (with same skill and barcelona), egypt would be considered good to even pass the group stage even if he scored 2 or 3 goals he would never be considered a goat for that matter. Just a legendary club player. Even entering the goat club with world cup and serie a winner, maradona, would be difficult.

Let's imagine salah with 1.5 times goal as much goals as what he can produced at this moment.

To become one of the best you dont need a international title as Messi and ronaldo were already considered as all time greats even before they won the national trophy. But if you want to enter the GOAT debate then yes you need a big trophy with your country. - Not my opinion but from media.

Messi was considered GOAT tier way back under the Pep days...he was the one who was compared with Pele and Maradona.

CR7 was never considered a serious GOAT tier until those RM CLs. And even still, he's always been compared to Messi, not Maradona or Pele. The national trophies had little to do with it really.

To me, the hierarchy is pretty clear. If you combine resume (trophies, individual and team), peak level and skill level, it's:

Tier 1: Maradona, Messi, Pele in whichever order
Tier 1.5: Cruyff, CR7, Beckenbauer, DiStefano, in whichever order

Ronaldos biggest career achievement is being compared to Messi.

Exactly...Leo has been hailed as the GOAT as early as 2010,2011...The Copa has nothing to do with it.

You should add Puskas, R9 and maybe even Platini and Zidane to your tier 1.5.
