Look at this picture while everyone was saying Messi has renewed.

Top tier sources said that Jorge Messi grew furious and ended negotiations after the club asked if they would accept a further paycut than 50%

The paycut also wasn't really a cut as he would be paid over 5 years for 2 seasons more at the club.

Lastly Laporta himself said he hoped Messi would offer to play for free to help the club out, and Messi's PSG contra cf t was leaked which is a monster salary of 1m a week before bonuses.

In summary

Messi wanted to stay.

Messi and his father love money

Laporta didn't want to pay him as much due to finances and pressure not to sign CVC deal because of the super league on the horizon.

Messi himself wanted to leave and was flirting with PSG for a long time, Neymar after signing an extension at PSG grimly stating he will certainly play with Messi again.

Laporta himself saying he wanted to sign Neymar. With I assume was to be with CVC money and that woukd fund Messi's extension.

Without CVC 0% chance Messi could have stayed as he wouldn't lower his demands.

I hope that explains the entire timeline of the Messi saga as myself and other analysts have slowly pieced together

Basically Messi wanted to stay when he could get 100m a season but chose PSG over staying and earning less.

lol @ the idea that messi 'chooses' to cruise in certain contexts, like the French league

very silly line of reasoning. no player 'chooses' to play well or bad. if that were the case then it would mean that messi deliberately chose to be completely absent for eight clasicos straight, etc etc, or that he chose to have shitty 2010, 2018 world cups.

players dont 'choose' whether to play well or not. they do the best they can. hence bad and good form.
