This is starting to resemble the Valverde situation quite a bit.
During EV's time at Barca, the narrative was that we had the best squad in the world but he was holding them back so much. Then he leaves and it quickly became evident that our squad wasn't quite as good as we thought and he was actually making it look better than it was.
Likewise, the narrative around Messi the last two seasons was that he was still the best but he was being dragged down by the average players around him and incompetence from Barcelona at board room level. Then he leaves and it becomes very evident that he isn't quite as good anymore as he was portrayed and that Barcelona was actually helping him rather than holding him back.
In both situations, I sadly fell for the narrative but at least was quick to recognize that. Credit to BBZ for being spot on in both situations from the begining.
