This part was interesting and have been talked about a lot since he left:

Sources said that Messi's devastation was genuine when he left, but others have since questioned why he didn't do more to stay. He said he did all he could, accepting the club's proposed wage cut, but could he have gone further? Maybe a little bit, but LaLiga's algorithm would not have allowed him to play for free.

"The salary can be lowered, but due to the financial control rules, each player has a margin for a reduction depending on different variables, such as age, experience and titles," a league spokesman told ESPN. "So you can neither play for free, nor with a 'lower' wage than what should correspond to said player in a normal market. La Liga pretty much confirming that even if Messi agreed to a 1m per year salary they would not allow it and would probably account for a much higher number making it impossible for us to register him anyway.

Just as they did with Alves last season where his actual salary was under 1m, but they accounted for 50% of his previous salary at Barca so the salary cap number was 6m.

Its been a year, it feels like eternity already considering that we went from koeman to xavi, played cl and el, attack of jutgla ez and braith to ferran auba dembele, went from middle table to 2nd place, no throphies.. 2 times dismantled by bayern, eintracht fiasco, el classico madrid battering. damn what a rollercoaster of a year it was. Fucking painful.

That day and weeks after, it was so painful. It was indeed the end of an era, the greatest era of this club having the best player in it's history. I hope he comes back for one last season, he deserves it. Even if his role should be somewhat reduced, let's see if he can accept that.
