Another possibility is that he simply didn't fit the list. We now have a backup for most positions. Umtiti can fill Pique's spot if he's injured and Vermaelen can come in. If Umtiti gets injured Vermaelen can sub him directly. Mina can only sub one spot.

True. For those outside the gala 11, being able to play more than one position is a big boost for getting into the squad list.

Anyway, Mina was fine in his few appearances. Vermaelen has been better, playing with either Umtitti or Pique.

You could make two CBs pairings. Pique - Vermaelen(is not slow) and Mina - Umtiti(not slow). That way you'll have one starter with each of them. We have a game mid-week too, so that way you can rest both Pique and Umtiti.
