3 Assists in his last 3 games for club and country. Brilliant this season.

£27M is nothing for someone who's going to give you 10+ seasons of top service. Similar to how people said Rio & Rooney weren't worth their fees, how wrong they turned out to be.

That's still two career domestic assist though isn't it? Not to discount his international play, but I generally think of two competitions as distinct entities.

He's excellent defensively but in the context of modern football I don't see the argument for spending £30m on a LB whose strengths are largely one sided. He's only average going forward and I don't know that he has the technical ability or the lateral quickness to put him up there with the best in the world. Of the younger generation, even beyond Alaba and Rodriguez there's still Gaya, Kurzawa, Telles, Mendy, Guerriero, Bernat, Wendell and Amavi. The latter three show similar potential defensively and have arguably outplayed Shaw through the last year yet all of them cost less than £10m.

£30m is supposed to get you Dani Alves.

£30M got you Dani Alves 7 years ago. 7 years ago! There's something called inflation and transfer fees have gone up since then. Like I said, £27M for someone who will be United's CB for the next 10 years at least is nothing.

He just turned 20, he's speed is incredible and he's already improving going forward this season, he'll get better and better and I have no doubt he'll be World Class in the next 12-24 months.

I don't know that inflation explains it given Alves was the most expensive FB in history until United signed Shaw, while on the other hand players like Bernat or Gaya, who have clearly outplayed him cost less than 10m pounds.

I don't know how you can argue you'll sure he'll be world class when there's a number of young players at his position that are comfortably better players.

Shaw cost £27M and Alves £30M, I think that would make Alves still the most expensive FB in history.

Young players comfortably better then him? Alaba yes and maybe Rodriguez (who btw was poor the other night and Shaw outstanding), but apart from those two, who's comfortably better then Shaw?

Shaw was also £30M:

"Manchester United have signed Southampton left-back Luke Shaw for a fee in excess of £30million.

The 18-year-old has signed a four-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months, at Old Trafford having secured the move after returning from World Cup duty with England.

United had an initial bid of £27m for Shaw turned down at the end of last season but an improved offer sealed the deal."

Rodriguez is in the same tier as Alaba and is also comfortably better than Shaw. One international match doesn't change that, but beyond those two there's Gaya, Bernat, & Kurzawa. Shaw is in the tier of Telles, Mendy, Guerriero, Wendell and Amavi. Most of these guys are a year or three older than Shaw but they also showed more going forward at the same age. All in all, there isn't a lot justifying 30m pounds let alone supporting any notion that he's sure to become world class.

Good player though.
