The Official Barcaforum.com MoM-thread award
La Liga, Betis, away (2-1)
1.
Messi (51,1%)
simply the best. Coming off a knee knock to score a quick double was all it took ~ barcanuck
2.
Iniesta (29,5%)
Had his usual "light on the feet" movements, almost nailed that wonderful long range chip to go along with the assists ~ Papabeef
3.
Pique (10,8%)
Solid, brought the ball forward and drove us from the back ~ aki13
Yet another brace earned Leo Messi not only the honor of breaking Müllers 40 year old record, but also more than 50% of the votes and thus the top spot in this edition of
The Official Barcaforum.com MoM-thread. If you don't count last weeks hiccup against Benfica, where Messi was subbed on in the second half, and off again because of a knock to the knee that had every single cúle from the North Pole to the Antarctic gnashing their teeth in dismay, then this weeks podium placement is Messi's 7th in a row. I doubt even Felix Baumgartner has seen the limit to this mans potential!
The man who assisted both of Messi's goals comes in at second spot. Just like the Argentine above him, Iniesta is in fine form these days too and is now top of the assists leaderboard with 10 to his name. Just around 30% of the votes went his way on a troublesome night in Seville, where the result could've been so much different had it not been for the two canteranos in 1st and 2nd spot assisting and scoring the goals. The talk of the town on the forums regarding Inieta's fine form is about our coach, Tito. Just like Fabregas has shone under Tito's tutelage this season, so has The Don himself. Some are arguing that Tito has been getting even more from Iniestas superlative skills than Guardiola before him managed to do, and while this indeed is a bold statement, you can't help but wonder if there's just a grain of truth to it, as Iniesta has arguably been better so far this season than the last one. Time will tell though, and I doubt we can draw any conclusions this early on in Titos regime.
Creating goals is not enough for any team, as someone is obviously needed to stop the opponent from doing the same in the opposite end. In this edition of the rankings, these someone are embodied by Gerard Pique who makes his rather unfamiliar way to the podium's third spot with just above 10% of the voting pool. This marks his first time in the top 3 since.. hold on now... the second match of the season where we faced Real Madrid at home in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup. That's a whooping 2 months and 16 days without medals for Pique! Hopefully this will prove to be the turning point of the season for the father-to-be, as we're in dire need of some stability in the central defense these days.
Random facts of the day:
* This actually happened during the Benfica-edition of
The Official Barcaforum.com MoM-thread award last week, but since I didn't do the recap there, I'll post it here. Lo and behold, our capitan, Carles Puyol, finally got his first votes of the season, as he scored 13 points for his performance in trying to hold the make-shift defense together against a rampant Benfica side. About time, as he at long last ended his negative streak of 7 games without points. Vámonos, Puyi!
* Even though Busquets will feel pretty hard done by in this thread - and rightfully so - he's constantly bettering his own record of games in a row with points awarded. After the Betis match, he's now on 11 matches in a row with votes to his name. Other notable players in this category are Messi and Iniesta who're both on a streak of 9 in a row at the moment. They will both wait eagerly for Busquets to slip up in order for them to overtake his impressive record.
Will Messi get a rest and will the topscorer of the Copa del Rey, David Villa, be unleashed in order to cement his place as number 1? Tune back to this thread in just 2 days, as we take on Córdoba Club de Fútbol, S.A.D at the Estadio Nuevo Arcángel in the Copa del Rey!
