Why does no one mention Maradona's lack of a European Cup, which for me is more relevant than a World Cup, which Messi lacks.

Plus Napoli were an excellent team before Maradona joined, they finished 3rd the season before he joined so Napoli weren't exactly a one man team.

Yes. The fact that the standard of international football is now much higher than back then should work in Messi's favour, not to mentioned that UCL > 10xWC in terms of competitiveness.

IMO its pretty obvious that the level of champions league football is much higher than the world cup, IMO even Euros are tougher and more competitive than the World Cup let alone the champions league.

Oh my lord, you get worse and worse with every post.

Saying the standard of international football is higher than it was in the 80s is absurd. Saying that the European Cup was more competitive than the World Cup in the 80s is even worse. This is before the Bosman ruling and before SkySports started the era of ridiculous TV deals. Club football was much more evenly distributed back then, until the 90s you didn't have a few European Super Clubs able to buy every single great players, and while the European Cup was certainly the most competitive club competition, international football still set the standard.

Today is a different story, but I still think there is nothing bigger in football than the World Cup.

Too true, but whatever agenda that it takes to perceive people into thinking Messi is the GOAT and better than Maradona they will take.

If Messi wins a world cup he will most probably overtake Maradona. He certainly has a legitimate claim as being better now, but as I said for personal reasons Maradona will always be my No.1

Messi winning the WC just makes it a whole lot easier to grant him the GOAT title.

That doesn't mean he has to win the WC to be considered the GOAT...

A club player will hardly be remembered as the Best ever player.

Unless he is Leo Messi.

Winning the WC is a major feat in football. Nothing more than that.

Maradonna never won the CL. Does that make him a lesser player than Maldini who won it 5 times?

Fransisco Gento won La Liga 12 times, and the European Cup an epic 6 times. Does that make him better than Maradonna?

Nothing makes any sense in isolation. The WC, as great as it is, is not the be all, end all of football. Messi's achievements at club level already place him among the all-time greats, and he is still only 24.

You just confirmed what I just said. Messi will be remembered among the all-time greats, but as long as he doesn't make it in the WC he will hardly be remembered as the best player ever.

I think as football is now more global and the CL is more global for people to watch this isn't exactly the case any longer because Messi does have a legit claim to being greater than El Diego now, however even if we wins 5 more CL titles and a world cup he'll never usurp El Diego in my eyes, but that is personal reasons not objectionable reasons.

I don't think football getting global and CL getting more prestigious have that big of an impact on this. National success, no matter how hard people try to downgrade World Cup now, always have a bigger and lasting image than the club and individual rewards. And to me he has to do something worthy with the NT to surpass Maradona., Because no matter how many awards he wins at the club stage, his failure with the NT will always put a heavy shadow on him (Considering the NT he plays for is considered among the power-houses in the world).

It doesn't matter if Messi keeps tearing Real Madrid and Manchester United new assholes, as long as he doesn't do it against Bolivia and Costa Rica than he can not be considered GOAT.
