I thought it would be Pique-Mathieu-Bartra-Vermaelen.
And Mascherano rotating with Buquetes.
I dont know who Mascherano bribed to keep getting that CB spot.

To be fair, Masch has done well so far.

Yeah, he has. That red card was completely unavoidable and it had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that even after all these years he still has no idea what he's doing when he plays CB.

It's up to you if you want that to sound sarcastic.

If he is the 5th CB this entire season then I see no reason for why he should hold out any more.

He should leave in summer then, for his own sake.

+1.

He's too good to be 5th choice at Barcelona.
He could easily be a starter for a team like Manchester United (for example).

Exactly. He has been called-up by Spain, he showed the last season that he is a very good talent who can become a top class CB. If he doesn't get any playing time at Barcelona due to some strange reasons then he should leave.

It would be sad to see him go and once again lose another bright talent(Like Thiago), but I will never blame him if he leaves due to lack of playing time.

Anyway, it's still early in the season, things can change quickly so we gotta wait and see how it goes.

The others havent really been given a chance.
Masch have done so many misstakes before its time to actually give a proper CB a chance.
HIs playingstyle is not that of a CB. His marking in awereness is lacking quite a bit.

Well, it's not like he had a lot of work to do... All teams we played against parked the bus and had not challenged the defense at all. Just wait when we play against some quality opponent who will begin to send cross after cross into the bock to take advantage of Mascherano's height.

Well, the whole idea is to stop the other teams from doing that to us. If they do cross after cross in our box, something is wrong in midfield and on the wings. Mascherano is maybe the best at reading the game from our team, while Bartra is arguably the worst.

Our defence will never be good at resisting pressure, unlike Chelsea's for instance. But it can be very good at stoping izolated attacks with accuracy and good reading of the game. Which is what we need tbh. Defending set pieces is pretty much the first thing we need to master. Except that, we need to be excellent in 1 vs 1s and on the interceptions.

At the same time, while he might read the game well. He only looks at the ball and has no awareness whats going on behind him, which has cost us dearly sometimes when he misses the marking completly.
He also bullrushes alot and makes those idiotic two leggs studs first sliding tackles.

Bartra has much better awareness and often cuts off passes. Hes also better in air.

Thats not the case at all. The reason that Mascherano has in the past and probably will continue to step out from the back is nothing to do with him 'no awareness of whats going on behind him'.

He has been asked to step out into midfield to give the opposition less time on the ball. He wont win it every time but he does a hell of a lot of the time.

The number of goals he has been to blame for in big games is minimal. The number of times he has been one of the best players in the big games far out weighs that.
