It's exactly this kind of false pride that had led us to our downfall. Our slogan maybe mes que un club but most players today are hard workers and of good character. Who are we to judge their character when we ourselves have betrayed our ideals by associating ourselves with Qatar.
Seriously this technical ability BS had gone on too long. A defender needs to know how to defend first. If we only look for a fancy passer we will get more piques. I'm sure a high potential youngster like Balanta can learn how to pass.
It has nothing to do with "false pride". I can guarantee you that the one thing that would lead to our downfall would be signing defenders and goalkeepers who have no idea what to do with the ball. Our style of play is based on having possession and our players are short and best suited to that playing style; most of them have been taught to play like that since they were little boys.
If our defenders (or GK's) eratically shoot the ball forward, we lose the ball, which means we have less time to score and we are more likely to concede goals. In the last few games, Mascherano, Adriano and Pinto have made several stupid clearances, we lost the ball way too much, sometimes barely got out of our own half and even conceded as a direct consequence to these clearances.
Not every defender we sign has to be as intelligent and good on the ball as Xavi, and I also agree that we shouldn't go for anyone who's just good on the ball and can't defend properly, but there are numerous examples of players who can do both. Hummels would be my suggestion; his footwork is amazing and on a good day, he's brilliant in defense. His problem is his inconsistency; if he were more consistent, I dare say he could even be the best defender in the world.
