how many league titles where luck evens out and the best team wins almost every time? how did they do lat year, when did barca have an o-fer, trophyless, season?

The best team usually wins in CL as well. Sure, exceptions happen more often than in leagues, but CL is still the barometer for success in Europe, until a better format is accepted.

Lions in La Liga, donkeys in Europe is bad output considering the resources at hand here. We're talking about the most expensive, highest paid team in the world.

Anything other than great performances in CL is not a good return of investment and a negative balance of resources/expectations.

all the great managers will tell you cup formats are prime for upsets. it is the very nature cup competition in a sport ever dog can have their day. the (current) players and managers have a much better grasp on this than fans. how do you think Real brass and fans feel with some truly zero seasons and being owned in spain by their epic rival?

This is very true.

Barça is better than Real Madrid as evidenced by their domination of la Liga.
Real Madrid had the ability to up their game in CL cup format. Also, a lot of their qualifications were subject of some form of luck or refereeing, on top of their top form. This is what happens in that format.

Does anyone think Ajax would be a title contender in la Liga or in Serie A ? Does anyone think Tottenham is better than Manchester City ?

It just seems that some teams can bring their A game or even their A+ game in knockout games while other teams underperform (Barça, City, PSG at their respective level).

it's a competition geared towards the rich and mighty having it easy until the KO stages. clubs like real or barca, don't even break a sweat in the group stages. then you have like 3-4 games to win it, depending on the draw.

sure, the winners usually are still the top clubs. but in the last years, the trend seems that it is not the best team that wins it.

just let the big clubs smash each others in a league format from october till may and you will definitely have the best team in europe.

ps: overall i felt that city was the best team last year

Yes very easy knockout stages, so easy The UCL finalists all were a goal away from being knocked out in the group stage. Took Allison magic and Inter choking for them to qualify.

Please do not try to peddle this narrative is doesn't look good on us when other clubs fans view this forum and see sour grapes.

Yeah, he doesn't. Nor do he, and serghei, understand that they are so wrong about this its making my eyes bleed. Dafuq.

Competitions; generally the best team wins, lucky doesn't really play a part.

Cup/Knockout/Tournaments formats: Luck and form of the day play a substantial part, generally the best team doesn't neccesarily win.

Why the hell would you argue this basic fact, either cause you're missing a chromosome or you're trolling.

Champions League means more in my eyes, regardless of which is harder.

We have 5 CLs and 26 liga titles, so one seems easier to win than the other to me

True! The Champions league has a bigger status than any national competition, obviously. Nobody would discuss that hopefully.

But the conversation was about the probability of the best team winning, and that probability is obviously higher in a league format than in a knock-out format.

"it's a competition geared towards the rich and mighty having it easy until the KO stages."

well, facts are that most of the time the big clubs get out of the groups easily. just look at the stats for the last 10-15 years.

liverpool getting out of their group not so easy this year is testament to the fact they were not that good to win it. but it was expected since they along with PSG where the favourites - which further solidifies the fact that big clubs get out of the groups 90%(maybe more) of the time.

the CL rarely surprises at the groups level.

your post was related to the KOs - hence you are an idiot.

La liga is more about winning against clubs weaker than you.
Barca can lose against RM and AM, but be more consistent against Getafe and Levante due to a Messi factor and we will win it every year.

So, La liga is about: who will make less mistakes against Mickey Mouse opponents.

Champions league is about winning against teams of your strength when their is no room for a bad night.

Also, there is another: vacation mode factor/no need for urgency.
If you lose against Getafe, NOTHING will happen.
You will get 37 new chances until the end of a season.

So, to some extent: league competitions will show who is the best over 30-40 matches, but that competition to some extent doesn't have an element of danger, a sudden death and "this is a do or die night", where if you lose: you are KO'd for this season.

Since Barca's players are technically the best, of course that La liga suit them more than a sudden death dangerous CL matches.
And especially since our team is filled with 10s of mentally fragile schoolboys who crumble like teen girls under pressure.

La liga is a competition for technique and consistency.
Champions league is a competition for warriors, fighters, motivated teams, mentally strong players, clutch players, players who can deliver in the 90th minute when you are losing 0:1.

When you look at those mental factors, it is really a no surprise that our schoolboys team have 0:16 goals ratio in the last 5 big CL away matches.

Atletico 2:0
Psg 4:0
Juve 3:0
Roma 3:0
Liverpool 4:0

And that we are often losing to technically inferior, but more motivated and aggressive teams (like Atletico who sucks over 38 rounds, but are masters of KO natches where you need a fighting spirit).

Cl is not only about luck.
It is about luck, warriors, motivation and mental strength.

Our current team doesn't have any of those for years.
