Memphis Depay

Yeah. If his first season is successful, you are forced to renegociate at the end of the season and sure enough he wil ask for a salary increase. It is only a good deal if he flops.

If it was a condition from Depay, it shows he is concious his position at Bar?a is not safe and he wants to be able to keep options open instead of sitting on the bench, especially with Koeman situation. Pretty mature and smart decision from him tbh.

Yeah, but contrarily I think even if he gives a good 2 seasons and then walks that both parties have done well from the deal.

Look at Griezmann, and ignore his transfer fee and wages. Imagine he came for free. For the level he has shown for 2 seasons, I think most Barcelona fans would be content with the level he showed while also be fine with not keeping him around as he approaches 30.

It is a smart deal that benefits both sides. And of course, if he exceeds that level over the next season then we can look at an extension for a year next Summer where the financial situation while hopefully start looking better as revenue streams post corona open up again.

No club give a 2 year contract to a player who isn't "very" old and thus represent a liability (or maybe the kind of players like Arsenal's Diaby who are physical liabilities). The more years under contract, the better for a club because you have leverage. Here, Memphis hold the leverage.

Exactly my issue with this. Next summer we will either be scrambling to renew him or sell him.

Yeah, but we are not getting Mbappe here. Very unlikely Depay would turn out to be a great transfer that we'll struggle to renew next year. I could be wrong, then again all signs point to the fact no big club wanted him.

So the bigger fear is that we get this guy on a big fat contract + signing on fee and we can't get rid of him if he flops here. That's why 2 years(never heard of something like this tbh) sounds to good to be true.

Probably true and probably why he made this deal. He wants to prove himself and then get paid.

Which is a good thing for us.

If he gives us two good years and hopefully help us win some titles and then leaves on a free while we'll have enough time to find a better/younger longterm replacement then so be it. But maybe he'll turn out good enough so that next coach after Koeman will also be willing to give him enough importance for him to stay more than two years.

What's clear though is that our attack will change a lot over the next 2-3 years with Messi and Kun also on shorter term contracts and both very likely leaving in 2023. Griezmann still has 3 years left but I doubt he'll stay for that long. Fati's contract is expiring next year (there are mixed reports about Barca having an option to extend his contract for two more years) but I think we'll do everything to keep him and build future team around him. And further Dembele's and Trincao's longterm futures at the club are also questionable.

While we'd still need to add more quality at least we have some more longterm options in defense (Dest, Emerson - if we won't be stupid and sell him, Araujo, Garcia, Oscar; we still need a longterm replacement for Alba though) and midfield (FDJ, Pedri, hopefully Ilaix will also renew).

This. Depay is 27. We know his level of the past 3-4 seasons since leaving Utd. 2 years is enough. We don't need to scramble to sign him in a year unless he puts up Messi numbers- which he won't. We can just be content with him giving 2 solid seasons and if he goes, then well, he goes.

Depay is coming to be a good hand without burdening our club with a long contract which we are currently drowning in. Quite frankly I would welcome more free agents in the Depay to Wijnaldum age range to come on moderate to good wages for 2 year contracts. Come, be a good hand and get out.

Meanwhile we spend the major transfer budget (when there is one) and the longer contracts on the crack signings.
