Hard worker, great team for his style, relatively low pressure environment. Liverpool is a great club where you can make the step from good to world class. I don't think he was average at all. Even at Basel he had special moments where he dribbled 2-3 players with ease and was fast as hell. Had some really great qualities all along, just needed the right team and the right manager, and has found it all at Liverpool.

He was always full of potential. He was excellent at Basle which is why Liverpool tried to sign him then, only for Chelsea to nab him. He didn't get a proper chance at Chelsea and then went to Italy where he improved year after year. Now he's having his best season because he's in a team that plays attacking football and plays to his strengths. His finishing has improved so much even from the start of the season when he was missing a lot of chances, now he rarely misses from good opportunities. He works hard at improving himself and plays under a top coach.

Harry Kane, came out of no where and scored a bunch, add to the fact that his playstyle isnt exactly spectacular(gets the job done though), the one-season wonder thing persisted for quite a while.

I'd also argue about the statement that he just gets the job done. He's quite a complete player. Not just a pure poacher, though it's his main strength.
