Barto was stupid to give out those huge contracts and pay those extertionate transfer fees. But he did it after us losing Neymar and with the club at the top of the revenue list.
Sure, the model was suicidal, but I'd wager we would have pulled it off if the pandemic didn't appear. We would have got rid eventually of the high earners.
They got what they deserved with their strategy, if you spend every penny you earn you're fucked if things go south and that's what happened. Of course nobody could've predicted the pandemic, but it's certainly not a coincidence Barca got hit so hard by it compared to most other clubs. Relying on shady "book balancing" swap deals leaving us with even more old and overpaid players just to keep the whole thing running was the writing on the wall for the fucked up financial situation.
Sure without covid it would've probably worked longer but still far from a healthy economic situation. You can't sustainably rely on these deals and hope for eternally growing revenue. Dembele and Coutinho were already dumb deals but at least mostly covered by Neymar, but doubling down with Griezmann without even selling an expensive player first was just suicidal and if it wasn't so sad for the club it would almost be funny that covid striked just at the right time to expose their lunatic squad planning.
