Hell man! Can't believe this happened man! The most important thing right now is to kick Barto and his cohort out cuz these clowns are clearly spies sent in by Uncle Flo to sabotage our club from the inside man. The glorious days may never come back again with these in charge!

Thinking for a moment that this isn't some conspiracy but Robert insisting on Paulinho.

Is this really a hill Robert wants to die on? this isn't a cheap gamble signing at all. We are paying 40 million euros on a 29 year old Midfielder who flopped in europe and was shipped off to China and his skill set is pretty much identical to players we already have.

I just don't get it. This is a signing so many people don't want to happen, and it has such a high risk of failing but he still insisted on getting him anyway. Imagine him playing a couple of games and Valverde deciding he's not good enough and he's benched or left out of the squad.

40 million euros down the damn drain and a guy who has no re-sale value.

Robert likely has assurances from Barto. Take the signing upon yourself and you'll be taken care of down the line come what may.

At this point thinking this was a purely sporting signing is the conspiracy theory.

As i said previously, Paulinho is a lose-lose situation for robert/board, If paulinho doesn't deliver he'll get blasted, Even if he does delivers, He can never live up to 40m a price tag, Not to mention as you said, Be accused of taking time away from youngster.

The only thing i can think of, For taking such a losing bet, Is that he is obsessed and fanatically believes that paulinho can help us win trophies, If not a treble, And then the 40m won't matter to the supporters, But that's just delusion and plain insanity if you ask me.

Not to mention he takes up a valuable non-EU spot, Sergi Roberto might leave because of this signing and we're on the hook for 10m a year for 4 or 5 years. 80-90m down the drain.

Again.

Shit signing but wont get 10m a year and has not been reported anywhere as getting that.

They're not that stupid after the disasters of Arda, Vermaelen, Douglas and Andre Gomes. Its naive to think they are this stupid.

Now that I've had some time to think about the season to come with a more level head, I've actually got some real thoughts about Paulinho that extend a little further than "fuck this". At best he'll never be much better use to us than a physical tackler who will do the dirty work the likes of Iniesta and Gomes would never do, although even then, it'll be questionable if he can actually do such a thing against top teams where such qualities would be at their most necessary. Will Paulinho be able to out-muscle a Sergio Ramos or protect our smaller midfielders from a thug like Kante? Or will he be able to scare players like Verratti enough to stop them from bossing a midfield? I haven't watched much of Paulinho at all, but if he has the quality to be that man for us I find it hard to believe he'd be seen as a Tottenham flop, and he definitely wouldn't be playing in a league full of teams I'm confident our B team could dominate, least of all at 29 years old.

It'll be interesting to see if Valverde gives him the treatment he seems set to give to Arda or the treatment Vidal got from Lucho when/if it becomes apparent he's not at the required level necessary to propel the club forward, or if he continues to get playing time for the sake of "adapting" (At 29 lol) or because he's the board's signing. 40m is a steep price to pay for a player who brings such a niche style of play that is not needed for most of our games, and is of an incredibly questionable quality, while being at an age that will see him begin to decline possibly before this season even ends. And if we don't even get rid of Rafinha or Gomes or any other of our dead weight (Arda isn't leaving, but he likely will play a Douglas role) this will just serve to bog down our midfield even more.

If we still had Lucho we'd be almost certain to see a Gomes-Paulinho-Arda/Rafinha midfield at some point which honestly is the most grotesque thing I can imagine but Valverde seems to care more about our style of play than that, so hopefully we won't be subject to that. Valverde has shown a lot of faith in Alena and has treated him as a first team member since arriving despite not promoting him and despite all the fears he's also given Samper far more opportunities than Lucho would have as well, and he's also played Roberto in more roles and given more minutes than the likes of Arda, so at this point all I can do is hold out hope that Valverde judges Paulinho on the quality he displays when he gets here and decides who is the best option to represent us in the XI on every given match day. At the end of the day all we can do is put our faith in Valverde and hope he makes the best out of this situation.

And who knows, maybe Paulinho comes in and actually does bring some solidity to our midfield that we've been lacking. I certainly wouldn't complain.

Barcelona has had thug midfielders before. Guys like Thiago motta and van bommel

At least those were dirt cheap. Not a 80-90m investment for a 29 year old we have zero competition for. These are the type of transfers that severely weaken our ability to compete in the transfer market in the future as we are required to pay massive amounts of money for deadweight wages for years and years. How many midfielders do we have if Paulinho and Coutinho join? 11?

You are making up wages to add to it.

Doesnt need that to look a bad deal.
