@VIVA BARCA: FC Barcelona says that P.Alcantara has no.1 place in their records with the most goalscores ever in the club. He played a lot of tournaments for Barca (357 games), ei. El Copa del Rey, and he was even with the national team several times (he was born in a spanish colony and therefore considered a resident). It's very obvious that Alcantara was no amateur.

We've been in Camp Nou 2 yrs ago. The tribute they gave for Alcantara is overwhelming. Make's you really proud that filipinos can also really excel in soccer. As what Alcatara seems to be in his interviews and pictures as someone from las islas filipinas...Go Barca!!

Back in his days, football didn't actually earn you much money, so he retired early from his football career and went on to become a doctor (see MJ's picture).

He was with FCB much longer than you think. He was with the club from 1912-27.

His parents wanted him to be a doctor, and they were so hesitant to let him play soccer at 15 yrs. old, 'cause they believe it will ruin his studies. FCB begged his parents to let him come to Spain and play with the team but got No for an answer.

Paulino protested, hungerstriked and got sick. They eventualy let him go, but in 1 conditon, that he will still pursue his medical studies and be a doctor.

He did but not until he became the FCB's star player, coach, and even the club's director for a couple of years in the 30's. (source: FCB museum archives...we've been in camp nou 2 yrs ago)

All that love for this sport and this great team is truly admiring. :party00231:

Well, the correct number is 356 goals in 357 matches (dates from El Mundo Deportivo - Barça 100 años de historia), but anyway...

I found it funny, all the SE Asian countries minus the Philippines followed the WC. They were more focused on the Lakers and the Lebron James transfer saga, at least, based on my relatives' activities during the WC. @_@

Also, during the WC, a good bit of Pinoys were asking why we don't have a WC team. A good bit of people answered that we're not tall enough. However, they're the same people who said that we will blossom in basketball. @_@

Hell, that is an amazing record that will probably never be broken! Out of interest, anyone know his stats in games against Madrid?

iloilo city-football

hello there!
im a proud ilongga (a Filipina from Iloilo City, Philippines)
just want to share that football has been born again here in the Philippines. Yes, at last!
it happened during the previously concluded 2010 AFP Suzuki Cup were in the team Azkals (Philippine National Team) beats the defending champion Vietnam with 2-0 score..rigth now the Teams Azkals is preparing for a Challenge Game with Mongolia this February 9, 2011 in order to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
Iloilo is truly the Football capital of the Philippines, a place were out beloved Paulino Alcantara was born. We all pray for the re-birth of football here in the Philippines. We hope to have more financial support from our government and other international linkages. we don't even have a stadium for football that will qualify the standard of FIFA.
We believed that Filipinos have talent and expertise in the field of FOOTBALL but we all lack support.
