"Too great of a loss."
Well, fuck me.
One more season like this past one and we'll be lucky to get 50m for him. Especially with Griezmann here now that is the most probable scenario.
Maybe, but I wouldn't be opposed to him staying ONLY if we gave him one season of playing LCM, really give him a try there. Especially if that means Neymar staying far away. As for Coutinho, as a LW, he's done, that's clear.
But Arthur-De Jong-Coutinho could be
magical. Arthur and De Jong have the work rate and ball retention to not need a similar player beside them, I see a really creative, more attacking midfielder could compliment them perfectly, even though I still wanna see De Jong in that role, cause he's just too damn exciting to be be limited to that CDM spot, especially when Busquets could still have a couple of years in him, if you put two quality and mobile midfielders in front of him.
But could Coutinho do it too? Under EV, of course not, but in theory? Of course. Long way to go of course, they would need to make it clear to him that LCM is the only position he'll be playing from now on, and he would need to be specifically trained, start improving his first touch and not to get bullied off the ball so easily, since losing the ball in midfield is much more serious than on the wing, and Coutinho tends to lose the ball a lot. And he would need to start defending at least a little bit too, at least show some passion and desire, for example Iniesta was no defensive giant, but he was always there, ready to run and help in defense. Coutinho just looks like he doesn't even wanna bother with running back and pretty much wants a free role, which is impossible in a team where Messi is. And if we had any sense, we'd be doing exactly that, asap. Give him a choice. If he doesn't want it, then sell him in the next month and promote Puig full time.
Getting rid of EV's pet Rakitic is a much more crucial thing to achieve this summer, otherwise our most talented young midfielders are pretty much fucked for another year, since Rakitic will be playing every (important) game.
