To be fair there’s no setup that should draw/win 9 vs. 11 in any way imaginable.

True, it is an extreme example. But I just can't see how a guy who is standing off side and then gets directly involved to score isn't influencing the game, or the positions and reactions of the defenders.

There is definitely room to manipulate this rule until it is changed. The most obvious is to play with 10 men and have your striker stand in the oppositions penalty box.

With current day Lewandowski, we might aswell try it!

Nah... You lose a man in build-up and find it harder to progress the ball if you dispense of a player and ask him to deliberately stay offside just in case he might be played on the 2nd pass.

Still remember some games we played with 10 men and Iniesta + Messi basically dominated alone upfront with the rest defending. Those were the days.

Then use it for portions of the match or situationally. For example look at defending a corner.

Instead, have the guy on the semi circle (think Dembele) stand on the half way line but at the wing, and then the Forward next to the opponents goalkeeper.
