I fell asleep and missed Liverpool game. But Everton, Newcastle and Wolves all played well today.
Everton are really solid defensively under Dyche, and now have draws in consecutive games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City. Of course the trade off is they have one of the worst attacks in the league so really have to be strong at the back.
I predicted Newcastle to beat Villa 2-1, it finishes 3-0. To be fair, Villa are a good team, but Newcastle have sorted out their form recently and guys like Isak and Murphy have really come on to a game in their attack. I really do like Isak - very talented, well-rounded player who contributes much more than just goals.
Wolves against United was an interesting game. Tbh the red card did ruin the game. However, I felt Wolves were the better team before then. Not necessarily innumber of chances created, though they did create a few. But it was their patterns of play - their turns and link-up play in tight spaces were excellent and really they played out from the back well - there were a few instances of balls flashed across the box that just weren't directed well enough - they don't show up in xG because the striker didn't connect, but they were great openings and with more care over the cross they could have had some tap ins.
Cunha is a superb player and I put him in my fantasy challenge team as goals from outside the box were worth 7 bonus points this gameweek. I didn't expect it to be from another corner though, lol. His dribbling, strength, vision and passing were all superb. I have liked him since he joined Wolves. Can he make the step up to a bigger club in future? Who knows, but he is still quite young.
United? Well, what can you say about them. Everyone knows they are my most hated club. But I think recent years have proved I am not underrating them out of bias. They really are poor with a lot of mediocre players (in my opinion) and they need a complete overhaul as a club and team, which likely will never come. As for Amorim, I do think he's a competent guy, and I like in one way that he's trying to stick to his philosophy, as I said. However, I don't necessarily agree with his actual philosophy - the way he plays three at the back seems quite defensive (though could be as he doesn't having flying wing-backs in the squad) and I think it's causing them to fail. Also, he keeps talking about how they will struggle for a long time - that seems to be like setting the expectations low. Yes they have poor players but other coaches come in and can get a tune out of their players quickly - the new Wolves coach has done it in the first two games. Might be just a bounce but there's plenty examples of managers not needing an age to improve things.
The entire thing about them though is that I do not see any way out of their problems. Even if they improve, I would say the very best they can hope for in future is top four. I would be amazed if they ever compete for the PL or CL under Amorim, unless the competition in these leagues/tournaments nosedives. It's nothing against him as a coach, it's more that they'd need to sell a lot of guys on very high wages, and also buy so many new, better players, which is just not possible with their financial issues and PSR.
United have Newcastle next on Monday night. The Toon will show up at Old Trafford full of confidence. Newcastle can certainly win it. As
@delancey says, United have Liverpool away after than then Arsenal away (in the FA Cup). After that their schedule gets easier 'on paper' - but let's face it, no game is easy for them. They cannot score.
