There is a meeting between Jorge Valdano and Ruben De La Red scheduled for tomorrow. It is about Ruben's new role at the club, till the end of his contract (2012) he will be working as a youth coach and that means that we're going to witness Ruben's official announcement of retirement... :icon_neutral:

What a shame. He was such a promising CM. Thanks Ruben, for all you've managed to do for the club, for your will to get back on the pitch. Good luck m8 :)

I saw him play on one of Real's summer tours to the US. Such a bright talent. Best of luck to him with coaching!

Always sad when relatively young players are forced into an early retirement. Hopefully he'll be able to live a happy life, although I can understand that I won't be easy to recover fully after what he's been through. And getting a promising career crushed like that must be really hard. Good luck in the future.

There is a world of difference between a good goalkeeper and a great one...

The margin is fine but it is the difference between winning games, drawing and losing. Sometimes the evidence is imperceptible but on other occasions it is glaringly obvious.

Petr Cech, on form, is perhaps, again, the best goalkeeper in the world. But you rarely see the Czech international sprawling the length of his goal-frame 10 times a match to keep out shots. He has regained a good deal of his confidence under crosses and his efficient footwork means that he is rarely caught out of position. These attributes may not be the most thrilling to witness but they are extremely effective.

Cech made three or four decent saves over the course of two legs against Spartak Moscow, and Chelsea were able enough at the other end to make their goalkeeper's efforts worthwhile. The result? Two wins, six points and a goals conceded column reading only 'one'.

Contrast that with the eccentricities displayed by Iker Casillas in the Real Madrid goal. The Spain capatin has been trading off a reputation, completely unfounded, as one of the world's utmost keepers for around a decade when, in the cold light of day, he is little more than a decent shot-stopper. His anticipation and parrying ability are far below a 'world class' standard and it was two Casillas errors that gave Filippo Inzaghi a brace at San Siro.

Firstly, he dealt with a cross in a manner which would have embarrassed even Manuel Almunia, before rushing off his line and dealing ineffectually with Pippo's clipped second strike. A goalkeeper with a degree of calm or assuredness would have come off the field with a clean sheet as, in essence, Madrid bossed the game for the most part. There seems to be a mistake in Casillas in every match and for Mourinho's Madrid to be as successful as Mourinho's Inter, these deficiencies need to be masked.
