No it's not so much about relevance.
It's just noteworthy imo, that Real Madrid have historically largely failed to make the CL/League double, which is bizarre considering that they are record winners on both counts.
It seems that they tend to prioritize the European Cup whenever they sense that they have a real fighting chance of winning it...
Barcelona btw, have always won the league when winning the European Cup...
Interesting and somewhat bizarre factoid about Real Madrid:
During their nine European Cup conquering seasons, in only two of those did they manage to win the league as well. That was in 1956-57, and again in 1957-58.
In 1955-56, they finished 3rd behind Bilbao and Barcelona, with 10 defeats from 30 games.
In 1958-59, they finished 2nd only to Barcelona, with 4 defeats in 30 games.
In 1959-60, they finished again 2nd only to Barca, with 5 defeats in 30 games.
In 1965-66, they finished 2nd to Atletico Madrid, with 6 defeats in 30 games.
In 1997-98, they finished 4th behind Barcelona, Bilbao and Sociedad with 9 defeats in 38 games.
In 1999-00, they finshed 5th, behind Deportivo, Barcelona, Valencia and Zaragoza with 8 defeats in 38 games.
In 2001-02, they finished 3rd, behind Valencia and Deportivo, with 10 defeats from 38 games.
Oh Franco , how could you let that happen !!!! how could you !! but he was fixing the games for Real to defeat Barca.. how can he let them win it in the peak of our team
Because Barcelona are only recent champions. They have changed the expectations of clubs. This is something I salute you for because Rijkaard and Pep never settle for less whent hey can have more. Good thing you have brought it up because its important to note how football has changed. In history, it was good enough to have a team that dazzled Europe and performed decently in the league, that was ground breaking. Today, Barcelona wanted all trophies, in the same year, there is no complacency, no such thing as a mickey mouse trophy. Not only did they approach each tournament seriously, they built the squad for it.
I am sure coaches like Capello wanted every single trophy they can get but on rare occasions did any club have the squad for it, Barcelona did it.
Well there is still Copa del Rey
