which is why I never jived with the idea of retiring numbers, not wholly, because then you miss the magnificence of numbers having legacy.

I like the tradition of retiring numbers that the US has, but I don't want it in football because we have our own tradition of a number accruing, as you so aptly put it "legacy". Both fine traditions but there's no need to mix the two.

It should be allowed if the club wants it to. I personally wouldn't do it, death is part of life and life goes on after that but I can understand. Retiring it because the player was such a legend is stupid, the next player to wear it should fill his boots then.
