He is the sporting director, and he didn't know that one of our players had planned to leave. First major mistake, and shows he is out of touch with the squad and the situation in the club.
Next, he complains that prices are too high. Well, not if we weren't in a shit-position regarding the squad in the first place. Let us take a look at the available players this summer, who could have strengthened our squad/starting 11, when we were chasing Verratti like a headless chicken, while anyone with half a brain could see it wouldn't happen:
Mahmoud Dahoud went for 12M€ to Dortmund. Big talent, with possession-based skills. Not guaranteed WC, but 12M isn't much.
Dani Ceballos went for 17M€ to Real Madrid. We tried, and that was wise, but it goes to show that prices are not insane as they suggest.
Bernardo Silva went for 50M€ to Manchester City. Huge talent, who has flair, creativity and much of the same qualities as Coutinho, although not quite there yet.
Youri Tielemans went for 25M€ to Monaco. Big talent, but younger and therefore more risky investment. Cheap, talented midfielder.
Bakayoko went for 40M€ to Chelsea.
Fabinho to united for 30-40M was rumoured, we didn't go for him.
Seri was available for 40M if we paid any attention to anything else than Verratti blinking or not in PSG-promovideos.
Conclusion:
Young talented midfielders went for 20-40M€ this window, and we managed to get 1 old chinese-league-player for 40M€. Therefore it was not insane prices that kept us from getting a better squad, but simply bad planning.
And seriously, if we talk about near-WC players like Coutinho we should start bidding before August, and have a plan B. We were obsessed with Verratti and thereafter Coutinho, when there were a lot of other good options.
