Wasn't the best half. We were better and quicker than Villareal, but they scored a goal and had few other chances to score. Meanwhile we kept missing chances, FDJ's being the highlight.

I think tactic was to sit back and counter attack but we struggled to realize that

Especially when it's clearly premeditated.. Valverde did it all the time and koeman does it (less frequently). Today for example we entered the second half defending from the jump. That's not sitting back due to opponents pressure, that s premeditated bus parking.

I think he kind of panics in the high-stakes games. Maybe "panics" is not the right word, but imo his management is much better when the pressure of the result is not big. A very worrying sign for me. Villareal played like shit, and was down to 10 men, no reason at all to be so scared of them as to sit back instead of bossing the game from that point on.

Dont think it is panic in high stake games or they would not go out from start to try and dominate game and take risks to go ahead.
The first half today was very open and Barca taking risks they would dominate to get ahead when like that.
Just seems they take foot off gas a bit when ahead and then wait more patiently for openings when other team over commits.
Didnt like it today as three at back marking one striker too way the man advantage further up park but dont think it is anything to do with fear but trying to manage games out. In some ways playing like that in second half is braver as relying on that defence to see it through and backing them to do it but hard watch.

But you don't need to be waiting for the other team to overcommit to use the man advantage and pass the ball around. That's just counter-intuitive. You already know that your defense is leaking chances, why would you take the chance and give control to the team having 10 men, when you can be using the extra man to control the game and score the 3rd.
This is just an extremely poor approach IMO. Especially since we also didn't look to score the 3rd very much.
There was an incident in the 89th minute when it was just luck that didn't make us concede a pen. If the ball hits Pique's arm 10cm wider, it's a pen, 2-2, and the 3 points are lost, with us looking like clowns.
If it's not panic, then it's bad management.

Thank you. Well explained. That's why I hate this approach. Very rarely you will close the game and there's good chance you concede.. especially versus ten players.

It is not panic or being scared of these games or would not approach them from outset so attacking.
Barca had better chances to scored a third than Villareal did to get a second even though not an easy watch.
They are slowing down to try and manage game out. Could be for a number of reasons but cant see it being fear.
