Does anyone else having the feeling that Deschamps won't select select Umtiti ahead of Varane as a starter for the up-coming games in WC qualifers?

The latter has been quite irrelevent for Madrid during the last 2-3 seasons IMO.

Better for us he gets some "rest"

Umtiti is pretty much a one man defense right now. Has to bail out Roberto, Digne and even Masche over and over...

Many papers here say that Deschamps will privilege the Raphaël Varane & Laurent Koscielny pairing despite Umtiti performing well at the Euros and Varane being mostly benched at Real...
But with Varane's injury, doubt he'd start in both the Sweden and Ivory Coast bouts. There's also Digne. Pretty sure Dembele will start as he's been in top form!

Knowing Deschamps, he will play Varane-Koscielny even in dead weight games.

Umtiti however is positioning himself to be a possible future starter for France when the time comes. A lot of Competition for that spot though when you have guys like Kurt Zoma,Laporte,Mangala etc (Around his age) fighting for it as well. But I'm confident he will win that battle down the road.

I like the attitude he's showing , doesn't lack courage either .. but he's a little bit clumsy when it comes to passing .. hopefully he'll benefit from those rondos they're doing in training , because he needs a bit of finesse in his pass like pique and mascherano

great game but he should be way more cautious in the pen area , almost caused a penalty for the 3-4'th time in the last games

Deschamps takes 6 months to react to everything. Also he doesn't want to appear a big doofus by selecting players for the first time just as they sign for big clubs. And he'll stay NT coach for a lounge time unless disaster hits.

I'd take a clever risk taker over a 'cautious' defender.
