I wouldn't say he was unknown before he joined us as a lot of people considered him one of the best CB's in France last season. Everything started to fall in place for him though when Mathieu unfortunately sustained a calf injury during training with France before the euros and he had to pull out and Umtiti was chosen to replace him.
Add Rami's poor performances early on in the euro group stages and him getting to many yellow cards that led to a one game suspension and it gave Sam a chance to shine. It was also around that time before the Iceland match where he made his debut that he signed with us! since that match he benched Rami for the rest of the tournament and it allowed him to show the world of his talent.
He definitely turned some heads during the Euros and his performances this season no doubt and his price is a bargain.

Thought he was really poor especially his positioning and looked like they targeted him and Pique first half.
