Samuel Umtiti isn't enjoying the greatest moment of his football career right now. After winning the World Cup with France, despite being in pain for the majority of the tournament, that decision has since impacted his ability to play football at the highest level. The centre back went against the advice of FC Barcelona in order to ensure he'd be available for the international tournament. Even now, that isn't something Umtiti regrets. "I had to put pressure on my knee throughout the World Cup, but now I'm a World champion."
"In life you have to make decisions and that's the one I chose. I don't regret it."
That alone should allow the club to cut his wages by a big portion.
"I had to work on strengthening my quadriceps and a whole chain of muscles [around the knee]," Umtiti told L'Equipe. "I had a big imbalance. I had had it for a while.
"I had to work three times harder to get back. During the World Cup, I didn't necessarily do what was necessary - or rather, things were done that I should have avoided.
"I have always been professional but there are protocols and certain things that you are asked to do even though they aren't necessarily good in the long-term. I regret those things a little bit.
He said: "The easy thing would have been an operation but I'm not like that. I'm strong mentally and I don't give up, even when it's tough.
"There were times when I said I should give up and have an operation. But I held out. During that time, I was quite cold and closed. I wasn't happy. I just wanted to get out of that nightmare.
"But contrary to what certain people have said, I have never been in conflict with my club over the steps to take. They have always listened to what I felt."
The club should sue the doctor of the French national team or whoever was responsible for asking him to do things that aren't necessarily good in the long-term.
If he wants to stay, he can work as personal fitness coach for Pedri, Garcia and Puig. He is more suited for that job than being a professional footballer for a club that competes for titles.
