Sergi Samper

Great article!

His loyalty is even more impressive considering what he turned down. Not only did he turn down alot of money, he shrugged Arsenals interest of even though 2 of the kids he probably had the best relation with (in the club) left. Consider that Bellerín was the only player to have played with Samper ever since he joined (age 8, I think), and that he and Toral supposedly had a partnership in the Xavi-Iniesta mould.

I hope he makes it

OK, I've seen some videos and he's a copycat of a wonderful Italian player Andrea Pirlo. Predicting from the his talent perspective: he should have done it to the Barca A easily. The problem is we have no Pirlo position in our system. There's a great tackler with good passing (Busquets); the engine and brain in one covering every area from the defense to the forward, very mobile (Xavi); and a dribbler, last ball passer exploiting space between the lines (Iniesta). This Samper boy doesn't fit in any of this role really.

And we need a tackler, Barca's and Spain NT shortfalls in the past came from playing w/o a tackler beetwen the lines, as they never lacked talented passing midfielders. Only when they incorporated DM, the success in Euro and WC was achieved. It was crucial. Samper won't be a tackler and his skills are closest to Xavi's, but it seems some major adjustments to his playing style are needed, as his movement almost doesn't exist in comparison to Xavi who covers all the pitch. Lots of thing to learn if the club wants to make him new Xavi.

What do you think?

Yes, he reminds Andrea Pirlo with his elegant passing. But do you know why AC Milan wanted Xavi when he was 19? He was just like Pirlo when he was younger and they wanted both of them to form lethal duo. He had stayed and now is bossing our midfield...

Xavi and Iniesta both started as DMs at La Masia and later evolved into CMs. There´s currently disscussion on many spanish forums whether Samper can make it as CM just like Xavi and Iniesta both transformed. Also Fabregas is huge example (he was DM). Why do you think they named Xavi as Pep´s successor. He was DM (you can watch some older matches too). Iniesta also started as DM in 2006 CL final. It´s all about him learning how to run a bit more, get his physique (Xavi is ultimate troll, he has belly so that doesnt count :D) and learn some moves from first teamers. He is first team material for sure.

All this talk about replacing our current players with exact copies is silly in any case. I remember the exact same case was being presented against Thiago as well. People were arguing who he was the most similar to; Xavi or Iniesta, and who he should slot in for and over time replace. Thing is, he is Thiago, not any of the aforementioned. He has brought something new to the team, and if Samper progresses as we hope, he'll bring some Samper to a team that needs to evolve in order to avoid getting stale and predictable.

There are a few cantera kids that genuinely get me excited about the future possibilities and Samper is one of them

Samper and Grimaldo are my favorites players from Juvenil A and I really hope thatthey can make it. That's why I believe that Oscar should be Barca B coach..he knows most of the players and can help them develop. Eusebio is a dissapointment because although Barca B has won some game, I don't see a change in the younger players.
