I did not want to initiate a comparison between Abidal and Maxwell, sorry if I did not make that clearer - Abidal and Maxwell are correctly employed by Pep depending on the opposition; everyone understands that Abidal is better defensively and Maxwell better offensively but seldom do we hear comparisons being made between the two because a comparison would be unfair.

This however is not the case with Busquets and Mascherano. Busquets maybe slightly better than Mascherano offensively, and for some reason people feel compelled to highlight this slight advantage at the expense of Mascherano, which I think is a little unfair. Imagine, if it is possible, that Busquets was Argentine, do you think he would replace Mascherano in the national team? If Mascherano was Spanish, would Busquets even make the squad? I doubt it very much.

Flavia - I do not dispute that he has improved, he is only 22 - he's not going to get worse! However at this point in time the best defensive midfielder at Barca is on the bench and that is a testament to the strength of the team as a whole. Don't let the strength of the team conceal Busquet's weaknesses, which were there for everyone to see last season - they're not as conspicuous this season thanks to a certain David Villa.

if i had to choose between masch and biscuits for DM i'd go for biscuits every time in the barcelona side. on another team.... different story

that's if you ignore the opposition. biscuits just suits us better for our playstyle. while masch is a monster himself no doubt... not as important to barcelona with his style i think

Now seriously. We were always saying Iniesta had a lot of "secondary assists" and therefore disappeared in the statistics. But how many has Busquets already? He launched Messi into Space for Villa's second in the clasico, today he did the same for Pedro's goal. I know, Messi is the one sparkling all those neat passes but you have to launch him into that available space to make Messi work his magic.

Agreed. To challenge Sergio for the first choice, Masch has to up his game in other aspects. We don't really need an orthodox, out and out DM all the time, since every Barca player is like a DM when they need to. So Masch has to be more of a versatile midfielder, of course keeping his DM skills along with it.

Look for Busquets more as CB in a three back system. Pep likes 3 backs against teams that go for a very defensive lineup. No Abidal in this lineup, either Maxwell or Adriano will be on one wing, Alves on the other. Either Mash or Xavi as the furthest-back midfielder. Pedro off the bench when Mash starts.

-His position in the first 30 minutes in the game against Kazan was really interesting,more of an old fashioned sweeper rather than the modern sweeper role he used to play in when Abidal and him are not in the same field,he was(usually) the first one to receive the ball from the defence in the build up,he didnt push into midfield so it was more of a sweeper role,in my opinion that was to deal with Kazan's counter attack that always annoyed Barcelona in the recent ties with Mascherano and then Busquets ,also to help Pique and Fontas to push further forward as they are both excellent with the ball under their feet,both very adventrous going forward ,he was really impressive in that role and its a shame that Bojan's injury ruined Pep's new tactics with the abscence of a well defined forward(apart from Messi and it could have been the dumbest decision to put him in the field after only 30 minutes)Pep said after the match when asked about the 3-4-3

-anyway I think that would be the best option to play both Busquts and Mascherano together,not a fan of the double pivot in the current Barca team,I guess Busquets will not be that good in Xavi's role so we may find our best line up something like this soon
