I like Mascherano as a Barça centerback, but you're wrong here. Mascherano has tunnel vision offensively. Once he picks his run, he accelerates until he passes. Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta, and Pique all will switch direction of attack on a dime. That was what was missing before Busquets and Xavi entered, and why play kept tunneling down the ineffectual left side, starving Messi of the ball. Rakitic has little vision with his back to goal, and Mathieu is much like Mascherano offensively. Many times Mathieu brought the ball up, facing the left wing, but had plenty of space to his right. He didn't even glance in that direction.
Busquets doesn't have to hit over the top balls or long through balls to contribute offensively. He just needs to move the ball towards those in the best attacking position, and he has always done that brilliantly.
