what about Thiago at false 9 then something like this:
Plan A
Busi/Xavi/Iniesta Sanchez/Messi/Pedro
Plan B
Masch/Cesc/Keita Affe/Thiago/Villa
Can this be Pep ideia?

How about we play with our normal starting XI

of Alves puyol pique abidal busquests xavi iniesta pedro villa messi and switch as needed depending on suspensions and injuries.
People look too much into it.
Also very unlikely that Sanchez will take Pedro's starting XI.
Pedro is immense.

I'm a little bit worried for Keita and his playing time. I know he actually made the most appearances of any Barcelona player last season, BUT his main role was as either a midfield substitute for Xavi/Iniesta, a starter if Xavi/Iniesta were out, a Cup player, or sometimes a more defensive sub for an attacking player if Barcelona was ahead. This is exactly what it seems Cesc will be doing this season. He will certainly start in midfield over Keita if Xavi or Iniesta are out or for the Copa Del Rey. I can't imagine Cesc not being the first midfield sub off the bench, and Cesc certainly makes sense to sub in for an attacking player if you want to go a bit more defensive and put in a midfielder, because he still retains a lot of goal scoring prowess. Furthermore, Thiago might actually be ahead of Keita for playing time after Cesc.

I think Keita is really going to have to develop as a DM in order to get playing time. However, in order to get playing time at DM, Mascherano will have to effectively be a permanent CB, because I can't see Keita getting DM time over Mascherano (who himself is only a sub for Busquets at DM). That won't happen if Puyol and Pique are both fit. I have a feeling Puyol will be out a lot of the season, but if he's not, I really dont see how Keita gets playing time. And even if he is, Keita only gets playing time if Pep chooses to make the backline Abidal-Pique-Mascherano-Alves instead of Adriano-Pique-Adidal-Alves. I don't think it's 100% certain Pep would prefer the first set up.

So basically I'm worried for Keita because barring an injury filled season Barca this yea, he's gonna have a tough time getting on the pitch.

He's a great backup option, not for DM however.
Arrival of Cesc, Thiago promotion and conversion of Masch to CB means that he'll have to play deeper.

He will have to play deeper for sure.

I always envisaged a midfield of Keita-Thiago-Fab.

Love the guy always quality.

I think he has the intelligence to learn how to play DM, he just needs time there. He certainly has the skill set and the energy to play as an FCB-pivot. I'm guessing we're going to be seeing Keita as a DM during the Copa matches and for matches were Sergio cannot play/is rested. I hope he's able to get a lot of minutes there, Pep certainly likes him as a person and wants him to stay around.

With Keita as a pivot, Xavi is usually dropping further back to bring the ball out of defense(more so in gerard's absence). As a result, he's unable to orchestrate our play as well as he can. His game suffers a bit. The Malian's positioning is a suspect and distribution no where near good to be a Barca DM. Its late in his career to learn a new role for a limited player like him. Not convinced.

He did an awful job to be honest. What the hell are you guys on? Bad touches, positionally unaware, horrible giveaways. He is not cut out to be a DM
