This tread should be changed to "Will Barca sign a defender?"

I've seen so many mindlessly advocating for a defender signing this winter, but very few actual options on who exactly.
Considering how few defenders are on par with what we already have, and add to that the fact that 99% of those are cup-tied, I'm suddenly not so sure we should by anyone this winter.

So, in my opinion, if we by some sort of miracle find the perfect fit - someone who can actually improve our starting xl, is not cup-tied and who's also affordable, then it's a nobrainer - buy!
However, this scenario just isn't very likely as I see it, and I wouldn't want us to buy just another cb to fill the ranks untill summer, where we can go for someone we actually want and need.

tl;dr:
Mr. Perfect shows up, sign him! Otherwise don't.

I don't think is that difficult... there's plenty excellent defenders in smaller sides who are better than, say, Song or Adriano out of place. Now, me, I want Bartra, and Muniesa, and even, why not, for Tito to give another chance to Fontàs... but let's not kid ourselves, Tito has 0 trust in them.

If Puyol was a couple years younger then, yeah, you could say that 3 CB's are enough... but the fact is that he's going to spend what's left of his career getting injured, so we have, literally, 2 CB's.

So either Tito starts trusting the kids or it's time to break the piggy bank, because a squad with two CB's is inadmissible even in third tier sides.

If we have both Pique, Masch, Puyol and Bartra fully fit during the winter transfer window, we're going to be way too heavily stacked in defense with another signing. I know Puyol has had some rather bad luck of late, but just because players age, it doesn't mean that a fully fit 34-35 year old suddenly breaks down and turns to glass. I fully well know that his injuries could be more and more frequent from now on, but I seriously doubt it's going to be as bad as you say.

Otherwise I agree on Bartra. Tito simply has to play him before we even contemplate buying another defender.

we are linked with Hector Moreno as a stop-gap sigining in January... He would be cheap, would be eligible for CL too. But you guys think he's a good option? I mean we let go of the chance to sign Vertonghen!! Is Hector better than the Belgian?

Probably not as good as Vertonghen; but the case is dire and a CB is needed. The kid is good and would be a solid role player as he has been with the Mexican NT.

Well, just look at his record this season. It's happened a lot more than it happened last season, and he was injured quite a lot then. I think it's fair to say that he's bound to be strongly unreliable.

And if Tito refuses to play Bartra even with every single other option out, I don't see what's going to change to make you count him as a rregular CB now.

We aren't usually winter market buyers (at least thats how its been in the recent seasons) So, dont be surprised if we dont get anybody.

Although yes, we do need a CB, at least someone who can play against the lesser teams.

I've been wanting Barca to sign an extra defender for almost two years now. Every summer I get so frustrated...

Well I said it at the start of the summer, not buying a proper CB could prove very, very costly to us this season. We have Madrid's poor start to the season to thank for this 8 points cushion ,if Madrid had started well I think just about everybody in here would be going in panic mode right now. not that the situation is ideal at the the moment, Barca fans better pray to the heavens when the CL quarters/semi's come around we have a healthy CB situation around that time.....

no we shouldn't sign a good defender till we become utterly miserable and then we can go play some fontas and when he also lost his legs we will have VV play all over the place...isnt that...the plan? ;___;

Well you still have Puyol/Pique/Mascherano which you could put any in first XI, Puyol's just been really unlucky with injuries. I don't think Barca need to break the bank for one, maybe a rotational CB, as you don't really want 4 1st team CB's.

Puyol isn't necessarily finished but we need to start thinking of a Puyolless future, it might be sad but it's the reality. For all the panic about getting rid of Villa and Xavi and what not for being over 30, Puyol is the closest to the end by a considerable margin.

Xavi can play at a high level for many years to come, Villa is obv not in Tito's plans which i found strange, or is it just a coinsidence he hasn't played since his spat with Messi? anyway, he's got some years left for sure, Puyol is a tough one but he's a warrior, he'll probably come back stronger/better

The Song signing was a silly one IMO, totally unnecessary Busquets would do a better job cb.
