Diego Costa will have to wait until next year to make his much-anticipated debut for Spain. The Atlético de Madrid striker picked up an injury in last night’s 1-1 draw at Villarreal and has been dropped from Vicente Del Bosque’s list for this month’s friendly meetings with Equatorial Guinea and South Africa. Juventus front man Fernado Llorente will fill the vacancy in the Spain squad.
Costa was taken off towards the end of Sunday’s match at the Madrigal and underwent a series of tests supervised by Doctor José María Villalón, Head of Medical Services at Atlético this morning. An MRI scan detected a Grade I-II tear to his right adductor muscle.
The first friendly of the New Year is against Italy at the Vicente Calderón on 5 March.
