The most common debate in English Football but I'd like the La Liga fans' takes on this topic.

Who was the best Footballer and why?

Scholes as an actual midfielder.

Lampard and Gerrard were great in their own way and the PL 00s brand of football. Athletic, strong, direct, goalscorers bombing up into the box. Lousy at controlling the tempo and higher order midfield organization/pacing compared to Xavi, Modric, Iniesta, Pirlo, Kroos (all of them dominant on the European and World stage which is the next level up).

Gerrard is much more box to box, all action style than those midfielders.

Gerrard was a combination of both and definitely controlled the tempo more as he got older and lost his speed.

Imo, Gerrard is one of the most complete players you'll see. He had a high number of attributes he was great at. Roy Keane once said that Gerrard had the ability to be world class in 5 different positions on the pitch. Plus, he was super clutch and dragged a bang average team to multiple trophies in big moments.

StevieG best leader of the lot, so he does get points for that. And Pool 04/05 CL is a tremendous achievement too. Almost counts as 2 CLs given the opposition and the state of the rest of the team.

The slip really hurt his reputation though. Without it and the famous last words before it, he probably gets rated higher than he does. Now you have a crowning achievement but also a tragic moment.

Stevie's collection of long range shots and volleys is absolutely phenomenal. Many of them in crunch do-or-die moments.

Shot power 100.

Lampard was absolutely incredible at his peak.

I think a good question is who would be the best in modern football. Would probably be Gerrard, then Lamps and with Scholes third of the three.

With respect to Liverpool at the time, Gerrard had to largely play with tosh in the middle. Had to be a one man team in his prime years. If he were able to be under Klopp-ball, oh my!

Lampard and Gerrard are all better than Scholes, imo. Gerrard on his day could do everything and probably the best. Lampard had best goalscoring ability.
