Our problem was we played two attacking fullbacks almost all season long. Neither Alves or Alba are great at defending. I'm perfectly ok with having an attacking fullback who has the pace to track back but isn't the strongest defender....it's just we can't have two of them....
Our second issue was Busquets, he pressed way too high all this season and he doesn't have the pace to track back in time. He got caught up field too much and our make-shift defense was by no means in any shape to cope with it. He needs to have a coach discipline him and remind him what his role is.
If we can get one strong, fast CB (I'm ok with Silva or Marquinhos), develop Montoya as a defender RB and get Busquets back on track we'll be in great shape imo.
I always loved Alves, but I wouldn't mind cashing in on him...kills me to say it. He hasn't been the same or nearly as effective since Messi left RW. The majority of the reason why he did so well was because of his fantastic link up play with Messi- and that just doesn't happen anymore. Alba is younger and seems to link up well with a couple of our players, especially Iniesta. It's time for a defensive RB, whether that be Montoya or a purchase, I prefer the La Masia talent being nurtured into one.
