If you got space ahead of van Dijk you just need to keep the ball close to your feet instead of trying to kick it past and run past him as some players do. That's when he catches up and intervenes. If you keep delaying the pass/shot the guy will more often than not keep falling back into dangerous areas which is a flaw in his defending.

Not really. It's his job to occupy the attacker and not let him do anything dangerous until support arrived to deal with the other runs.


Defending is all about organisation. VVD consistently stops attackers and holds them off until our other defenders can recover and get into position. That's how defending works.
