wayne had sooooooooo much potential but i think a lot of guys will rank Benz over Rooney
Won't be surprised. The last 2 Real Madrid seasons did a lot for Benzema's reputation.

Football fans used lots of revisionism and changed the narratives of the past.

That doesn't change the fact that Real Madrid always looked for an elite striker publicly while they had Benzema for most of his Madrid career. And that says it all really.

Before 2021, Benzema was seen as Giroud-esque figure. A technically brilliant striker who had amazing linkup play but lacked the finishing, mentality and other qualities to be a main man. Remember when Ibra, Cavani, Auba and Aguero were rated above Benzema?

ROOOOOOO-NAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!
Remember the name, Wayne Rooney!

The goal that made it impossible to forget who he was.

Unfortunately when he started to cheat on his missus, it didn't help that when he left he always turned and said "remember the name..."

Yeah true but Benz was a good finisher until 2013 or 2014, during the Zidane years he was most fo the time crap to score goals but have to say guy was one of the unselfish strikers ive ever seen

Dreadful coach sacked again

He somehow got billed as a proper student of the game just because of his jealousy fueled digs at Ronaldo

He is a dreadful coach indeed (at least right now). Without sounding like a dickhead he doesn't come across as the smartest of guys so probably not cut out to be a coach. Not to say coaches have to be very intelligent but he seems like he's lacking a lot in that regard.

Did he really say anything bad about Ronaldo, though? I thought he just said Messi was better.

He took a couple of digs at Ronaldo over 2022.

His comments on Ronaldo are fair in isolation. His agenda is clear though when he never praised Ronaldo in the press for the previous decade when he was performing yet starts taking shots at him the moment he is on the wane while defending the likes of Maguire and even saying the Glazers had done a "fantastic job" as owners.

No opinion on his comments about Ronaldo as I didn't hear them, but yeah the stuff about Maguire and the Glazers is dumb,

Thoughts on Rooney the player? Doesn't strike me as your type of player.

Very good player. A bit overrated but par for the course being English and playing for Man U.

Still a top player in his day. Though all the talk that he could play in midfield when he got older was hilarious at the time and proved utterly clueless when he did get older.

Inconsistent touch and inconsistent in general at times. Technically poorer than a lot of other top players in some ways eg first touch, but good in other ways (long range shooting for example).

Relied a lot on his explosiveness. Terrible international career other than Euro 2004, and his 09-10 season was pretty overrated when he started being compared to Messi and (lesser) Ronaldo.

Other than that he was still a top class player for many years. I prefer strikers like Villa, Eto'o, Suarez, Benzema, Aguero though.
