Hmmm....I'll go with Özil, closely followed by Messi. Messi is excellent for Argentina , but not decisive, unlike Özil for Germany.

tbh the Defensive aspect is non-existent here. I had Masch with 4TK, 4TGP, 1 clearance; Carvalho PC 101/110 92% although no tackles or clearances; Lucio PC 93/100 93%, Bougherra 71%pass 5TGP, Enyeama who although let in a lot (5), also saved the most goals (20) and had minimal help (Shittu). I had only 15 spots and the defenders took a backseat. We'll get them after the next round perhaps.

My vote is also for Messi for his ability to attack and keep the ball, his crosses and corners were great, passes galore good rate, and most noteabale for me was that he attacked and got the ball in the penalty area for others to capitalize I believe 6 times. Gerrard also did this 5 or 6 times too but lost the ball more.

Id agree with the first poster. Ozil so far with Messi close but if Messi can find his scoring touch in the knockouts, he will surpass Ozil methinks

but Messi has led argentina to 9 points, had a hand in nearly every gol scored, hit the post and been threatening, tracked back and played defense, and against greece led the subs to a victory over a former Euro champ... I have to say Messi

I'm not yet sure Messi is going to win the WC... but if Argentina goes to like semis would he be the WPOTY again? His maximum-possible-club-level performances combined with WC performances?

There has not been an overall best performer so far really ala maradona in 86 or Baggio in 94 or Buffon in 06.

I picked Forlan as he alone really has put Uruguay at the top of their group. Messi has done very well but not scored. Ozil for me was a close 2nd.

But yes really not one player has not stood up alone as a stand out player here imo.

Donovan may have made the impossible, but Honda Keisuke has the influence of Messi for Japan. Not only that, he's scored a couple goals, too. So Honda has my vote.
