Robert De Niro doesn't seem really badass to me... Or may I haven't seen very lot of his movies. But then again he's really soft in most of the movies I've seen, even the gangster flicks. Pesci's easily got the biggest lunatic title to his name, but De Niro's badass roles were a lot more subtle and intricate, for example in the godfather, casino, even raging bull, he wasn't a total nut but he definitely carried out his role the best, which was more difficult than any role Pesci ever had. Having said that it still doesn't mean Pesci is not the undisputed king of all time nut cases, but De Niro also deserves a mention, as does Al Pacino. De Niro's performance in Godfather II was probably not only the best piece of acting ever, but probably the best executed gansgter role in a movie.

Well he is not THE biggest badass of alltime but in that movie I am referring to (The Deer Hunter) he is. And of course in a few others (Godfather trilogy etc.).

Obviously not on the same level as those I and others have mentioned though.

One can be considered being bad ass in a movie role without necessarily being a bad ass overall.

Gangsters, thugs, super heroes, action heroes can all be bad ass, but being a "Bad Ass" is a whole nother ball game imho. That's where I think the disconnect is happening here.
