Who should replace Valdes?

Reliable or not, at least we have something.

I'm still supporter of the idea that Ter Stegen should play one season as a #2 to Valdes, because he's the best possible person to teach him what it is to be a Barca GK. For him the best thing to happen is to have a transition year, he's too damn young.

But yesterday I've read that Valdes is not even planning to stay until 2014. For a 20-years old like Ter Stegen would be VERY risky to come and start playing as #1 from the day one.

He could impress, but it could also ruin his Barca career even before it started. If we really sign him, then I'd pray to all of the gods (Maradona, Hendrix, Hetfield - everyone) that kid would have some big, huge BALLS. (no homo)

Problem with being gk for Barca is that you rarely have anything to do. Also, having to be fairly comfortable passer.
I'd say concentration, technique and being dominant on corners and crosses (due to our general lack of height) is what Zubi should be looking for.

How good is Ter Stegen with the ball at his feet? His passing skills are like 40% of his work as a Barca goalie.

I agree with what you say about the transitional period and that is a worry for me, too, especially since he does not speak the language (and even if you get Hummels, he does not speak Spanish and to have one defender and the goalie be able to communicate properly with each other just does not do it for me).

@ barcanuck

About his playing skills: ter Stegen acts as if he was Kahn (so he pretends to have huge balls) but his footwork is lacking imo. He gets pressed too easily and gets too nervous when on the ball.

This. You have to concentrate and be good the few times you get tested. I hear Ter Stegen has the concentration and dominance on corners and crosses. Haven't heard about his passing though.

I read somewhere that Ter Stegen have completed more successful passes even than Valdes last season (or this one - I'm not sure).

Which means that his teammates play a lot with him. Which also means that they wouldn't do so, if they were not convinced he's good with his feet.

This is promising that at least he plays the ball with his feet lots. Now how fast can he learn Spanish?

You guys are forgetting that Pique knows English and so does Hummels. I'm sure Ter Stegen probably knows english too since a lot of Germans do.

Yeah it's a problem that language barrier but if we have pre-contract with him, he could start to learn spanish from now. Like Pep is doing with german!

Just saw the highlights of Monchengladbach's EL-game. Ter Stegen conceded 3 goals, he looked quite poor in 2 of them.

One of them was impossible, one he could've saved but it was pretty difficult and the third he could've saved too

Saw the 1st & 3rd, nothing he could've done on them....In general, Borussia were terrible in large stretches

Yeah, the last goal was difficult but he didn't even try saving it. Had he been more on his toes he might've managed it.

De Gea has been pretty great this season from what i have seen/heard (not a big united fan) and is improving so I wouldn't mind getting him over ter Stegen.
