It was just a little pass and Messi did the rest ...if this was anybody else it most probably wouldn't have been a goal

On a broad count, it does. whoscored counted it as an assist. As there isn't a rule for it, it can be counted. I just don't think penalties or rebounds should count, as a player would then be able to assist himself.
